American Persimmon

Just thought I would share a story about this wonderful tree we came across.  My MIL was driving in a nearby town and came across a yard with this huge fruit tree in it.  The branches were weighted down with an unidentified fruit.  Being the friendly and curious person she is she stopped and asked about the wonderful fruit tree.  It was a persimmon tree....not like all the other persimmon tree's that are native to this area...but a huge tree with fruit bigger than you see in the supermarket.  It was amazing.  The gentleman that lived in the house had passed away a year ago and his grandson said he new little about it but he remembered his Grandfather had planted it 10-15 years ago.  He graciously said we could have all that we wanted off the tree.  The fruit was so sweet...not like anything I had ever had.  I wanted to plant this tree in my new orchard, but the only seeds I could find in the fruit were small and flat.  So I let one get fully ripened hoping to mature the seeds so I could plant them.  I tried rooting a cutting to no avail.  The seeds never fully formed.  I asked my BIL who is a Master Gardener and he said he would look into it.  I came to find out that this tree is an American persimmon which can be grown here with some protection.  It is the only available persimmon that is self -fertile.  However if the tree is not pollinated by another persimmon the fruit is considered seedless!  Puzzle solved-----Never heard of such a thing.  I looked in my catalogs and found out that these tree's are very expensive, nearly $30.00 for a 2 ft bare root starter tree.  Wow!  Guess I'll be going w/o one of those!  Have any of you seen this type of tree before?  I'd love to here more about them.  Have a wonderful night! Blessings to you.

TURKEYS

{ 11:16, Wednesday, December 26, 2007 } { Posted by Jess }
HI
we raise giant whites and we have had great success with them so far. Like I said before no waste to a turkey and the only big problem with home grown turkeys is finding a roaster big enough to fit them. My hubby has made me one and in the summer I roast them out in the fire pit. I am wanting to try something new next year. Instead of butchering all of them when we do our meat birds I want to do a couple earlier in the season when they get to a the size of a meat bird. They are not tough by anymeans it is just that I want to see if there is a difference in them. Take care and I hope I helped in some way. If you have any other questions ask away as I love hatching raising and cooking turkeys.
Love your blog have learned alot from it.

Persimmon Tree

We have one and we live in S.C. I didn't know until Christmas Day what the seeds looked like until a family member that was raised on this land told me!! We have these huge kidney bean seeds in our yard from our dog eating the fruit. I thought the deer was doing it, but my uncle said it was our dog!! I wasn't sure if humans could eat them or not. I've never heard of a Persimmon Tree until moving here on this land.

Persimmon tree

Here in Indiana, the persimmon trees grow wild, the seed is flat and they do grow from that flat seed. The plup is very good, to make Persimmon pudding. Which is very good.....You let the fruit, fall from the tree, if not it will be bitter, I pick mine up morning, then again in the afternoon. You can put a drop cloth on the ground to catch them, and make them easier to see. You then take off there little cap, wash, very lightly, or they will become mush. then run through a strainer, I put two cups plup to a freezer bag. Thats what it takes to make a pudding. Here in my home town we have a Persimmon festival, every year..rides..lots of things made from them. There is persimmon rolls, bread, icecream...all from that little fruit.
