One of those things you should have

After going through a very long power outage I learned about alot of things that I needed that I didn't have.  One of those things is that I needed some way to get information about the current situation/weather.  I had a weather radio but it is electric and there wasn't enough battery to back it up long.  So it got me to looking and thinking....if the need did arise in any situation...how am I going to get information about whats going on...as well as questioning....Do you really want/need to know what was going on?  After much consideration I decided that it would be a good idea to find some way to get info when I needed it.  So I looked into some simple solutions to meet my need.  What I found was a Dynamo hand crank/DC/AC adaptable radio/tv with NOAA and worldbands.  No matter where the event took place or how large of an area it covered there would be some form of information available to me.  The dynamo hand crank allows me to charge the unit by just turning the handle for 60 sec.  The DC adapter allows me to use a simple solar setup to use the unit if necessary.  Now these come in a range of prices and quality.  The main difference is the ability to hold the charge and the strength of the hand crank itself.  I was very fortunate to find one on a clearance sale for $10.00 (normally $50.)  Now is a good time to find these due to the change in broadcast signal (for TV) coming in Feb. 2009.  It is going to require an adapter to run the old style TV's with an antena after the change.  But for my purposes this is not a concern.  I mainly want the AM/FM/WB/NOAA radio signal.  Most commonly the price range is from $10-$69.00.  You may have to go to a specialty type of store to find these.  Radio Shack has a pretty good selection....our local MART does not.           Remember Keep It Simple---and meet your need---don't let them sell you more bells and whistles than you need----a hand crank can only do so much.  I hope this has been helpful to someone.  Many Blessings to you!
