Things I stock up onWhen I decided to keep a store of items for an emergency, I had to put some thought into what would be a good thing for us to stock up on. I have very little storage area so I had to make the most of it. When it come to food storage mine is probably different than most due to the fact that we produce alot of what we eat. We have a large garden, chickens, rabbits, goats, fish, fruit tree's, berries-things like that. My husband also hunts so that really add's to the meat. We are soon to have dairy cows and pigs. So my list of storage items may vary a lot in this area. Here are some in the food catagory: Flour, sugar, baking powder, soda, yeast, shortning, tea, coffee, honey, lemon, salt, vinager, spices, cornmeal, oats, cocoa, peanut butter. With these items I can make most anything I need. Without them it is going to be pretty bland. Most of these items store very well in a cool place (like a cellar) and are inexpensive to stock up on. I rotate my stored goods for freshness. How much do I store? It depends....mostly on finances...If I have an extra $100 I stock up...when I don't, I use it. But I generally try to keep enough on hand to make it through a winter. Other items I stock up on: Matches, seeds, candles, bleach (see earlier entry on how to make your own), laundry soap, bath soap, dish soap, lamp oil, T. paper, benadryl, acetaminophen, ibuprophen, vitamins, various med supplies/bandages, goat meds, feed, toothpaste, 12V lightbulbs, meat cure, chain saw oil/fuel, screws/nails,work gloves, paper and pencils. This is not a complete list but some of the most important. I didn't build this stock up all at once. My general rule of thumb is-if I think of something I would hate to do without I buy 2 the next time I shop and put one back and forget about it. Then when a "financially challanging month" comes along waa-laa I have it in the storage-life goes on normally and I replace it as soon as possible. It really comes in handy. I also try to keep little gifts for the children stocked back so I always have something in a pinch. I store these items mostly in rubbermaid boxes and I write on the lid catagories so it is easy to find. I would like to say I have a year supply of everything but that's not happened yet....it would be great though! Think of the security in that. Mostly I concentrate on the ability to produce what I need and take care of what I have. One note on my seed storage-I always buy seeds that will reproduce its-self. Alot of the 'new-modified' seeds wont produce seed that can be used again. Look into that if you want a hair-raising read. It's pretty creepy, kind of reminds me of that ol saying-whoever controls the worlds food controls the world. Not a pretty study. Anyway just take my advice and go with heritage seed for your storage purposes...atleast you'll have the option of replanting your own seed if necessary. I hope this has been a useful entry to someone. I would love to here from anyone who has an idea on storage items that I might not be thinking of or any good idea's on this topic. Have a wonderfully blessed day!{ Post a Comment } { Last Page } { Page 187 of 224 } { Next Page } |
