Looking for the right cow

{ 08:27, Friday, December 14, 2007 } { Posted in Cows! } { 3 comments } { Link }
Good morning!  I am looking for real life information to help me pick out the right type of dairy cow.  We are looking at getting 2 H and a bull.  I have read alot and am now considering the Jersey.  I would be interested in the Dexter but they are to hard to find and really expensive....any suggestions.  I'm open to any options at this point.  We are still putting up fence and building new barns.  I have experience with dairy goats and my husband has experience with beef cattle (worked on a ranch for a few years).  There will be 12 family members using the milk and I make cheese.  Any ideas? Any helpful tips?  Thank you and have a blessed day!

You are so blessed! I have been wanting a cow for fresh milk and cheese and butter. Oh, the possibilities!

I have been researching Dexters and Mini jerseys. I Know that you could check with your local extenstion office for info.

How blessed you are to be able to get one (or two!)

Well, I'm no dairy farmer but my Great-Uncle always had Brown Swiss. He said the milk was better and my Great-Aunt always made the best butter and cream from it. Not sure of the production rate but that's what he had for years. They're very easy on the eyes too LOL. Good luck!

Looking for a cow

If you have not already, trot over to www.keepingafamilycow.com. There is a discussion board with an "auction barn" category. Many folks offer cows for sale there.

We have Jerseys and love them. Brown Swiss are nice too but much larger. And some Dexters are "milky" and some are not.

And you'll do fine with a cow. The butter is a nice bonus! If you can handle a goat, a cow is just as easy, more docile, and gives a lot more milk...which you will learn to use without a problem!

Blessings!
