Three Cheers For The Red White & Blue!
Did you know our first American Flag was made of wool? If you know anything about spinning and weaving, you can appreciate the effort that went into making our first American Flag. That's just part of the process. To learn more about it and the woman who created it, this is an awesome site. http://www.ushistory.org/betsy/#faq You can take a virtual tour of Betsy Ross's home, learn facts you might not know about the flag and even learn how to cut a 5 point star with one snip! Betsy Ross did!
Did you know she outlived 3 husbands and had 7 daughters, all while maintaining her own business? Her pew at Christ's Church was right next to George Washington's. Think about the grit it took back then just to survive.

I really like this one! Only one bloom and it didn't last long. I am glad I got the picture.

Thinking about the Fall Garden
Posted by HSB Front Porch
12:43 PM, Jul. 3, 2009 .. Posted in Homestead Garden and Farm .. 0 comments .. Link I know, Summer just started, and I'm talking about Fall already! But, in order to have a Fall garden, some things should be done now- planning, ordering seed, planting seeds to transplant into the garden when it is time, adding compost or any other needed soil builders, etc. In my area, July 1 was the suggested date for planting tomato, pepper, and eggplant seed. I'm a few days behind schedule, mainly because I'm trying to keep up with harvesting the tomatoes that are ripening like crazy right now! Most of the Fall planting for my area comes a little later, since July and August are always HOT Many of the same vegetables that grow in the Spring garden can be replanted for Fall, they like the cool weather and will do well if they have time to mature before a frost gets them. You can probably get a list of what grows well in your area in the Fall either online, from a local nursery, or from your County Extension Agent. Here's a little chart to show when the first predicted Fall frost date is: Zone 3 - Sept 1st - 30th If you aren't sure what zone you live in, here's a map that will show you. With that information you can see how long it takes a particular crop to mature and then count backwards to get an estimated planting date. Of course, it all depends on the weather, and it is good to give your plants at least a week or two of a head-start if your area often has early frosts. I live in Zone 8, and sometimes we don't even have a frost until close to Thanksgiving. Fall is a great time for growing here. Please share what you grow in your Fall garden and any tips you have. Those of you who live in colder climates, please share your wisdom, as this Texas gardener has never had to garden where it really gets cold
Hope you have a great holiday weekend, and maybe next week, spend some time planning (and perhaps planting) for the Fall garden!
Blessings, My Garden, Inspired by Tasha TudorIt has been 2 years since I went to Vermont and met up with several total strangers! Well, they weren't complete strangers. I had known them from the internet for at least 5 years prior. I felt like I knew each one of them. We all gathered in Brattleboro, VT and then took a little trip to see Tasha Tudor's garden. It is great fun to be able to say I've walked in her garden! We had a great time. Memories I will cherish always. Here is my own flower garden, a work in progress, inspired by Tasha's garden book and then that lovely walk through it for real.
That is the south side of our house.
Some gorgeous irises.
The one below is unreal! Purple and lavender!

This pair of swallows is nesting in the corner of my garden in a bird house I put up last year. I have definitely noticed a reduction in the mosquito population.
Tending the house below.
Here's one of the babies looking out at me. There are at least 2 in the bird house. Who couldn't love that face?
The parents, keeping a watchful eye.
This last one I took by sticking the camera lense inside the opening of the bird house. It came out dark, so I tweaked it a bit. You can make out one of the babies.
Excellent Home Making ArticleWhen I read the following excerpt from Managing A Home by Crystal Miller in the Homestead Happenings newsletter this morning, I just had to e-mail her and ask permission to post it here on the Front Porch. Some of our new bloggers may not be familiar with Crystal's newletter or her Country Store, and I don't want anyone to miss out on the blessing of what she has to offer! The article spoke to my home-maker's heart and was both an encouragement and a reminder that I need to be diligent in caring for my home and family. Hope you enjoy the article as much as I did. Blessings,

Are You A Cheerleader?Ok, I'll admit it. I was never a cheerleader. I was the mascot. I've always enjoyed playing dress up and if I am given the chance now, I still would. When my daughter played basketball in high school, I wanted to secretly be the mascot for one game and not let her know, but this post isn't about that kind of cheerleading. I am talking about the kind of cheerleader who in everyday life is an encouraging person. I've decided that we all need at least one cheerleader in our lives and that we should endeavor to be cheerleaders every day. Just think of the positive impact you might have on someone's life. I have some friends who respond rather luke-warmly (OK, coldly) about my plans and projects. I'll admit it. It hurts. There are just some things a person gets excited about and wants to share and then the old eyes roll or the "why would you want to do that" comes out of their mouths......or the silent treatment. They say nothing. I always wonder what is going on in their heads, but I am just better off not knowing. I feel that jealousy and envy are a big part of those responses. These people are not very good cheerleaders and actually drag me down, way down. Then there's my cheerleader friend who responds with "YOU GO GIRL!" She's always encouraging. If there is ever any criticism, it's more like a cautious critique. More like advice. She always makes me feel like I can do anything. You choose. Do you want to be a cheerleader or a bottom feeder, dragging everyone down with you? The way you respond can make or break a person's whole day. Peas and CherriesBeen super busy here on the homestead. Been picking and freezing peas. Did over 27 qt bags of flat snow peas for stir frys and gave away 2 gallon bags to a friend. Also did 2 qt bags of shelled peas last week. I think I will have a ton more today when I pick.Got cherries for 60 cents a pound and bought 88lbs! Gave about 15lbs away to family and to a few families DH works with at church. But that still left us with over 70lbs. Last night DH and I pitted about 50 lbs. We are freezing them and then flash freezing them for future cherry shakes! Will also flash freeze some with pits for ltitle popsicles for the kids. They love these in the winter and will spit the pit out. I had a dear friend call last night ask me if I wanted 20 more pounds of cherries free. I said sure.......I am a little looney if you ask me...Plan on canning these. It has really turned hot. In the 90's all week long. Hopeing to get our pool FINALLY set up. Doesnt seem to be a priority for some, it is for me, I am hot! Quote of the week

10:35, Monday, June 29, 2009 .. Posted in Kindness Quote of the Week .. 1 comments .. Link I hope you enjoyed the week of sheep pictures. I took Sunday off and enjoyed friends and family. We had a fish fry with the fish Chris and Juliana caught at the lake. Very tasty! I was going to wrap up sheep week with before and after pictures of the llama. She had her first shearing ever on Thursday! She looks like a totally different animal. I have yet to get the after picture taken, however, so you will just have to wait. For now I will leave you with my quote of the week. The best way to find good in thyself is to begin to look for good in others. Unknown Featured Blogger~Mama Hen
