My Empty Nest

Wow! It's been a long time!

I don't know why, but I just totally forgot about blogging- I was reading other's blogs and remembered- I hadn't blogged in 5 months.

My daughter's wedding was so wonderful. It was certainly one of the best days of my life. To see your own child who you have prayed for, miraculously (by God) find a spouse whose mom also spent much time in prayer for him- it is just beyond words. Not only that, it was a fairy tale wedding of any girls dreams. I just am so thankful. Those turbulent teens years behind them- it is just so heavenly. God is still working on them both and I will let Him.

He knows what He is doing!!

We had such a blast with everything getting ready for the wedding too. We had girl parties, the Shower, tasting, flower decisions- so much fun. All us girls- the sister, sil, MIL and me all went to the Spa one day too.

So, that came and went and we are pouring over the pictures and the home video a friend made. What a memory!

Then Christmas! I ended up cooking the Newlyweds first Christmas Dinner! His family hosted Christmas Eve- we had a great time.

Then of course it is always something- Christmas night I had a pain in my lower abdomen from being on my feet- long story short- what the Dr. thought was my gall bladder turned out to be my liver. So still waiting on what is going on. So much to do around here- I have no energy. I haven't worked in 3 weeks.

More later if I don't forget!!

Staying tuned in

Just got back from Mom's Night Out with my homeschool support group. Mind you, mine have all graduated homeschool, but I still need to stay "tuned in". Possibly to help the younger moms, possibly to help my own spiritual life. There were only 3 of us tonight, but I still felt refreshed and encouraged. Of course I don't advocate leaving home all the time- but we need our own spirits fed a bit too. One of the mom's has 11 children and she is my son's godmother. She is a tremendous encouragement to me and the other has 7 daughters and is always so joyful to be around. I need these people in my life!! To think I may not know them but that I homeschooled. God is very good.

If I had it to do over again...

I was just browsing some blogs (I am new here!) and ran across one at Celebrating Each Day and below is the comment I posted. It was long, so I decided it would be my blog today!!

If I had it to do over again...

10:23, Wednesday, August 22, 2007 .. Posted by DawnT625 .. Edit .. Delete

This is probably the most important thing to realize in our families and society. Children need and really WANT their parents around. Even children who are "supervised" all day miss out. My children are 25, 23,and 19 and if I had it to do all over again (oh, how I wish I did sometimes!!) there are several things that I certainly would do differently. I did homeschool, but my girls (the 2 oldest) were a bit older when we started). My son was homeschooled since 2nd grade and though he has some quirks and difficulties he has had the least problems in the teen years.
What I would do differently
1) NO SLEEPOVERS!!!
2) NO YOUTH GROUP(unless I was involved, which I was quite often- chaperone, etc)
3) NO DATING (groups of friends only)
3) NO PUBLIC SCHOOL whatsoever. I saw a BIG difference in my children when they went to school. Also, in the older years- you wouldn't believe what goes on!!)
4) More family activity
5) Basically, I wouldn't let them out of my sight. I thought I was a pretty good parent only to find out you can't let your guard down for a minute. No matter what, don't trust any other parent with your child in overnight situations. I got caught in the trap of letting my daughter spend the night with church friends- I was burned a couple of times. I did have the problem that my husband and I weren't always on the same page and sometimes he thought I was too overprotective, but when I wasn't is when things occur that are regretful.

Just thought I would pass that on if anyone is researching this. Another word- when the moms went to work is when all you know what has broken loose. I fought tooth and nail to stay home and I was able to pretty much while my kids were growing up, even though we didn't have much money. Work is a burden and it gets in the way of being a mom. I did work partime at some undesirable jobs just because the hours fit so I could be home. I do feel for the single mom, they don't have a lot of choice, but I really feel that most working moms do have a choice and the best choice, unfortunately, doesn't last too long and then like I said, regret occurs.
Off my soapbox!!

wedding plans

As my daughter would say, the wedding is 2 months, 28 days and 15 hours away!! It is coming very quickly. I still have to pay for her dress and the shower is in a couple of weeks. She has been engaged since January. What is a real blessing is her fiance's parents are blessing them with a fairy tale wedding and reception. They didn't have any girls, so I guess they are thrilled to do it. We are thankful, but there is still a lot of expenses and things to do. Right now I am working on a scrapbook for her. I plan on giving it to her at her shower.  It is going to be the even of a lifetime (well, aren't all weddings??). Speaking of weddings... my husband and I just renewed our vows last October a month after our 28th annniversary!! (So now I have 2 anniversaries-- you bet I am going to milk that!!) We did almost everything ourselves- I even made my dress and my litte great-niece's flower girl's dress) had the best time. We became Catholic 4 years ago and were married in the Catholic church (another reason for the wedding). My daughter just became Catholic this past Easter and will be married in the Catholic Church also, which is very exciting! Hopefully, they will give us many grandchildren!!! Yippee!!

That Darn Snake!!

First off, know that I don't really like snakes and second off know that, yes, I was crazy to let my daughter have one a few years ago and then my son have one too. Well, they have turned out to be pretty easy pets (no dog hair or chewed up stuff- well then there is the whole feeding time thing, but I don't participate). So, months ago, my son's snake escaped. (Still don't know where he is). And in the last few years, my son adopted my daughter's snake, since she is out of the house. Well, the life of a snake isn't too exciting, so you can't blame them for escaping! A few days after my birthday (June) I discovered the snake was gone- turns out my son and husband KNEW IT!! They didn't want to tell me on my birthday. Well, the rascal decides to come back but went to the other snake's old tank!!  A few days later the snake was gone again. It gave me the creeps for a few days, but we figured it had gotten outside somehow and was gone for good. WRONG!! Yesterday, I was in my son's room and turned to go out and low and behold! It was making its way back into his cage!!! EEK! I ran out of the room, my husband went in, grabbed the snake and insisting on holding and petting it (then ran out and got a mouse for it). Can you believe it?? I was shocked! Where has it been all this time??

Just a Note

This is my first blog- my daughter signed me up for a MySpace account, but this is more my speed. I am a former homeschooling mom as my youngest just graduated in June (yes we had a big graduation for just 2 graduates, but that is another story).

I have joined this blog in the attempts to learn from like minded women. I still have a lot to learn at my age. If I can impart any wisdom, I will try.

I have always enjoyed journaling/keeping a diary, although I admit I was never very regular with it. Now that my nest is emptying I figure I might have a little more time with my thoughts.

I am not sure exactly how this whole blogger thing works- I am not even sure how I ended up here- just searching under frugal sites and one thing led to another.

I have always been interested in anything to do with homemaking, saving money, stay at home moms (even though I do now work, but not your typical 9-5 thank goodness.

Looking forward to reading your blogs!

Dawn
