When I read the below metaphor, I thought it was just too cute not to share!
I hope you enjoy this little jewel from 1863... 

An excellent system of gardening for ladies: Make up your beds early in the morning; sew buttons on your husband's shirts; do not make up any grievances; protect the young and tender branches of your family; plant a smile of good temper in your face; and carefully root out all angry feelings, and expect a crop of happiness.
