"These are a Few of my Favorite Things,"

Shared in Assorted Random Thoughts

Yesterday I was asked to tape up a tattered game box that had pieces falling out. I took the box and started using regular Scotch tape but then decided to go for something more heavy duty. I headed to the garage and grabbed some duct tape and began bandaging the box up. When I was finished, no game pieces could fall out anymore. Once again I was reminded of the helpfulness and usefulness of duct tape. I then thought of some other things that are so handy, no one should be with out them. I will also share some personal experiences, which are close to my heart along with each object. Here they are:

#1.  Plastic Tarps are great for making pools to beat the summer heat. First you dig a big hole, then put the tarp in and weight the edges down with bricks. Fill it with water and you have a pool. Digging it and getting dirty is almost more fun than getting in!

#2.  Duct tape. I already explained one use for that. Another is for patching leaky tarps. (Very effective.)

#3.  Five Gallon Bucket. These things are indispensable to any household. A favorite use of these buckets of Kelcee, Kam and me is making them “water shoes.” After a big storm, there’s always lots of rainwater on the sides of our dirt road, so we put our feet in the buckets, hang on to the handles and wade in the water. It’s lots of fun!

#4.  Pocketknife. This is one of my favorites. Pocketknives are extremely handy and I am hardly ever without mine. I have it in my pocket as I write this. I use it for everything. Whether I’m whittling, cutting a string, peeling an apple or trimming pine sap out of my dog’s fur, I always enjoy using it. Pocketknives are definitely multi-purpose tools.

#5. Slingshot. Well, you can be without this, and get along just fine, but it sure is fun. Slingshots are great for improving hand-eye coordination, and can also be used for self-defense. (I’ve never used it for that though.) With a little practice, you can hit something the size of a coke can, (or a squirrel.) This time of year I make use of acorns and use them for ammunition.

#6.  Lucky. O.K, so she isn’t’ exactly an object, but she is close to my heart as are the above. Dogs should certainly be taken into account as they, (in my eyes) are among the best pets. The more I think about it, the more I’m confident that Lucky is one of my very best and closest earthly friends. (If not, THE best.) I agree with the old saying “A dog is a man’s best friend.” Let’s face it, they don’t complain, (well, Lucky does sometimes by whining,) they don’t disagree, they listen to everything you have to say and when you feel like being quiet, they understand. For a little bit of kindness and love, you get a lifelong friend. Lucky also has her own anti-false-friend built-in security system. She’s friendly with strangers and accepts them, but it’s not until you really get to know her and invest in spending time with her that she opens the door to her little world. Once a mutual trust is built, it really starts to get fun. After spending time getting to know her, you can read what she’s thinking and she’ll ask you questions with her eyes. If you’re chasing her she’ll shoot you catch-me-if-you-can looks. If you’re going for a walk, she’ll look back at you and say, “thank you” or “I’m having fun.” If you’re just sitting still, she’ll look at you with eyes that ask what you are thinking about. Once you have that trust built, thoughts can flow between you and her with just a glance and without ever saying anything, yet understanding each other perfectly.

Lucky is much more than just a dog to me; she’s a wonderful friend.

Now, I want to hear from you! If you’ve had any experiences with any of these objects or others, tell me about it in a comment. I’d love to read it!
