Hello all, What a week I have had and now it's Sunday. My one and only day to do things for me, but that's o.k. I will have Tuesday off too. Now that the sun is shinging through, the snow is beginning to melt which means flooding around here. In one spot of our basement, we still have a leak and it's driving me crazy. It comes in one spot and made it's way into my sewing room. I had to move everything again, pull back the carpet and use my carpet cleaner to get all the water up. I swear, the next time I buy a house, it will not have a basement of sorts, will be built up on stilts, or will just be an ark! I can take most anything from snakes to creepy bugs to heat, but give me leaky basements and you will see this old lady from the northwest screaming from the roof tops pulling her hair out. It's just too frustrating for me. One morning I had to go outside to make sure that there was no water standing where I think the leak might be. Now mind you, I only was going out in the backyard just for a peek, in my housecoat, nothing less, nothing more. I barely shut the door, skidded on the ice in my boots to the spot, and was soo happy to see the sun hitting the spot and there was no water. I was tickled pink. Made my way back to the back door, turned the knob, and oh --ap, the door was locked. I know I did not lock it, but it was. So here I am standing in 34 degree weather, locked out of my house. I got to the shed and get a couple of small flathead screw drivers hoping I can open the door somehow. NOPE. Twenty minutes have passed and now I am cold. Thank God I keep a blanket in the car and grabbed it. I went to all the windows on the back side of the house to see if by chance one wouldn't be latched. Found one, the kitchen window which is way over my head. Now remember, I am not a spring chick anymore, but by golly, I found a ladder, climbed to the top of it, pried the window open and like a bull in a china shop, got inside. I spent the rest of the day inside. I have decided that I am going to hide a key outside now for if and when this should happen again. Anywho, with that quiet time came some reading finally. I don't remember who it was on here, but they had read two books by Susan Beth Pfeffer. One is titled Life as We Knew It and the second is The Dead and Gone. Let me tell you, I just finished the first book and what a great book to read. I believe ever homesteader should read this and have it in their library. I will not tell you what the book is about except for it tells the story of how a family out in the outskirts of town survive a disaster. There was some eye opening things for me while reading it and now on my list of things to prepare my family for. It is not a long book, and guarenteed that you will not want to put it down. Oh how I am now longing more for a wood stove. I am starting the second book today, and hubby is going to read the first one. I asked that he read it. I want to get his response about the book. Well I best get going. I am making a list of things that I want to get soon. I finally sold my serger machine as I am having a hard time with my eyesight to thread it anymore. I have around two hundred to spend and have already ordered my fifty pounds of organic sugar, now I am looking into ordering some wheat for bread making. I am headed to the store Tuesday and will pick up some wheat berries and grind them up in my Vitamixer and make a batch of bread. We will decide if that is a way for us to go. I use a bread machine since we barely go through a loaf of that bread in a week. We are not heavy bread eaters but I would like to stock up. I also inventoried my canning supplies. I am in need of some quart jars for my meats and hopefully some butter that I want to try. That and cheese. We eat alot of cheese. Again after reading that book, it made me think of really how our family eats and lives. Will talk to you later |
