HEAT, CATS, FOOD, take your pick!

Hello everyone,

Well, while Grandpa is keeping the grandbaby occupied, I decided to take a few moments for myself. The baby and I have been having a clashing this afternoon and this grandma knows why.

Heat

It has been so hot here the last couple of days and he has not slept well. Today I had decided to stay indoors to keep cool and Doodlebug wants to go outside. Right now it is 101 degrees and just miserable and he wants to go swing. I have tried putting him in the tub with all his toys, but that was a no go. His momma will be home in an hour so if we can keep him happy for that time frame, I'm good with that.

Speaking of heat, I was laying in bed last night, and could not believe all the crickets that I heard. I couldn't even count their chirps to detect what the temperature was. Those poor little legs of theirs was moving so fast, I could just picture smoke coming off of them! I bet tonight is going to be worse. I have been keeping all the water feeders cleaned and filled. In the early morning and evenings, the Robins come in for a sip or two and a bath. Last night I ran the sprinkler and you would have thought they were kids playing in the water, flapping their wings and jumping all over. I have noticed that the local squirrels have also found a cool spot here too. I took a big clay pot, over turned it and put a plastic saucer on top. Added a few rocks and wa-la a drinking hole for them. Of course they have to wait until the birds are done with their baths first.

Here's a question for all you indoor cat owners: When do cats get to that stage of just being independent and want nothing to do with you!!!!

I was going to sleep last night and all of a sudden, here is this 20 pound cat trying to lay on top of my stomach. Of course he's got to start the bread baking mode.  He gets on top and starts kneading with his feet trying to get comfy. Well let me tell you, with the padding I have, there is no point in doing that, it should feel like he's on a waterbed! But NO, he continues and it's too hot for him to find a cool spot. Then here comes the other one. He decided to lay between my husband and I at our heads. He likes to sleep on part of the pillow. I guess he feels like he's a person and wants the support. Of course by now, everyone is awake trying to get repositioned!

Tonights supper is going to be CORN. If you haven't heard of that before it's: clean out refrigerator night. I have some leftover roast beef and vegetables that need to be cut up and eaten. I took out two containers of beef broth from the freezer and will thicken that up, add the beef chunks and some frozen mushrooms. I will serve that over some noodles and serve with cucumber slices and cauliflower bites with ranch dressing. Something hot and cold but it will at least clean out the frig more. When the weather cools back down again, I need to get my butt in gear and get my once a month cooking done. I make some meals up and put them into foil pans that have these neat cardboard covers. I mark on the top what's inside, the date and I am done. When I need something in a hurry or don't feel like cooking, I pop one of these in the 6 qt. oven roaster ( keeps the house cooler) and know that all I need to add is a vegetable and condiments. I usually will make up: Grandma's rice dish, spaghetti, lasagne, chicken ala orange with rice, and whatever catches my fancy.

Well best go and save grandpa. I hear the all mighty bribe of cookies!

Will talk to you later

You may not have intended it but you gave me a terrific idea. I should use my roaster more often in the summer. Our kitchen gets so hot...It makes me not want to cook....which gets me into bad habits. Praying captain cranky pants gets some well deserved rest.

Friday, July 4, 2008 - I am a cat owner

Posted by HopefulHeart77

I am an indoor cat owner. My oldest indoor cat is seven. So far he is still not to the stage where he is independent and does not need us anymore. He tries to get in any room that we are in with the door closed (especially if he hears us talk.) We have two indoor cats. My oldest daughter moved back home to afford college. She brought her cat back (Vader the seven year old). My youngest daughter moves back and forth as she is a military wife. She comes home to live when she cannot be with her husband. She could not take her cat(dido 2 years old) with her because of apartment rules. So, basically we have adopted them and they are now called the grandcats. They wait for us at the door when they hear our car pull up. When we sit down they hop into our laps. Even though I would not have chosen to have indoor cats(I was raised a country girl so animals live outside and people live inside) they are quite a joy in my life. I do not like the hair and daily cleaning out two litter boxes is not real high on my list either. I put soft paws on their claws to minimize the damage to furniture and carpet. But like everything else there are pros and cons. They are nice companions for me when hubby is away at work and give me plenty of things to laugh about. I love them very much.
