Addendum to recipe for bean soup (dum is the operative word here)

Forgot to tell you to dice the rest of the onion, slice another carrot into rounds, about 1/4" thick and add these to the soup the same time as the beans. Remember that soup is an individualized dish, meaning you can add or subtract as you like depending on your own tastes. For instance, substitute rutabagas for cabbage in vegetable soup, or use rutabagas instead of potatoes in pot roast. Also in pot roast, use V-8 juice instead of water and reduce the salt. It makes a sort of tomato-flavored gravy.
Economics: first, try to ignore the talking heads and their predictions, they vary as much varieties of flowers, though many more of these opinions are bad smelling. Try to think in terms of what things are really costing you. If you never use saffron, why would you care about the price? Similarly, that $75,000 Super luxury SUV will most likely never be in your driveway, so concentrate on the costs of maintaining and driving the old Cherokee, Blazer, Bronco, International Scout, whathaveyou and make decisions pertaining to what you have and how to best use it. The fancy $2000 special imported shotgun wil not perform appreciably better than the second-hand Mossberg or even the old Ithaca pump gun or even the top-break single shot. If the shooter practices, and knows his weapon, he can do just as well as the fancy club member with the fancy gun. The basics of all this is the old tenet, buy for cash. Buy the best you can reasonably afford and learn to use what you have. Debt is a killer. I should know, we have been slain by it more times than I care to own up to. Also try to imagine how often you will use whatever you purchase. One of those deep fryers for turkeys seems neat and deep fried tuekey is tastey, but how often will you use it? Perhaps three times a year? Likewise, don't buy the newest and latest when what you have will do just fine. E.G. this computer is six years old and nearly obsolete by certain peoples thinking, but it serves me just as well as a new one would and the money I don't spend is mine to keep. As I frequently tell my grandchildren,"THE BEST WAY TO SAVE MONEY IS DON'T SPEND IT!!!!!'. Not that they listen to me and their mother (my daughter) also believes I,m looney. Well, got to get caught up on seed catalogue reading, though I usually buy plants and seeds from local nurseries, but it does give me some ideas of new varieties to try and starts the dreaming. Sweet dreams to all and GOD BLESS US, EVERY ONE, no exceptions.
