Hawthorn Tree?

04:53 PM, Friday, April 28, 2006 .. Posted in Gardens .. 2 comments .. Link

We have a tree in our yard, that we're trying to identify. The closest I can come is a Hawthorn Tree. Does anyone know if this is, in fact, a Hawthorn?

The blossoms: the buds are small, tight, and round. The blossoms look like wild roses.

The thorns:

Here's a link to a description.  There is no picture, though. Our Kentucky tree book has a pic of a hawthorn, but not this species. So we're not 100 percent postive that's what it is. This tree has never blossomed before. Wouldn't it be cool to have some Haws? I guess that depends on whether they are sweet or bitter. lol

I believe it is ... we had one at Historic Murphy's Landing and it was identified by our resident naturalist. The blossoms look kind of like apple blossoms and the scent is really nice (at least ours was). Lots of thorns. We never got any haws, though - think the birds got them when they were tender.

They are lovely trees unless you are trying to go through them, then you get stuck by the thorns.

Thanks!
