The milking saga continues...
Okay... I couldnt get her into the stall today, but I did get the lead
rope on her and tied her to a post outside. I do think I got a little
more than last time, and she never did manage to kick me, though I can
tell she is more inclined to kick on the left side than the right... so
maybe I need to approach her from the other side. Though the right side
is better for me, and if I tie that leg back then Im safe :)

The lower board was out and on the ground, so Autumn just
gave it one good headbutt and knocked it out. We'll need to put a tighter fitting board in there....

I filtered the milk and added it to the jar in the fridge, but at this
rate it will take a month to get a gallon...LOL.

Both of them are such sweet animals though... its not such a chore to tend to them, they are very much like pets.. just really BIG pets :D

Thursday, April 3, 2008 - Add a head stanchion

Posted by pljammie

We don't have a narrow stall. We just built a wooden head stanchion onto her existing feed trough. Basically, two 2x4's. One is nailed in place and the other is on a screw thingy so that it can rotate. I have a chain fixed to the board that doesn't move and it wraps around the other loose board and snaps closed. (sorry, I'm not good at explaining) I'll try to take a picture of it and post it on my blog tomorrow. It made milking much easier as she couldn't move backwards or forwards. Also, we milk on both sides, but most cows are not accustomed to that. It does, however, make the milking go much faster so she doesn't have to stand patiently as long. Good luck...soon you'll have gallons of milk!
