Blessings!

   Well, this is just the beginning of our preparation for winter food stores. It makes oure lives so much less stressful when we do it this way and so for the next 30 days we will be doing our winter marketing. This means trips in different directions, hitting all the clearance and bulk sales and cleaning and restocking the go-down:)

   Just yesterday we purcahsed turkey's at .23 cents a lb. We have all teenagers at home now and always end up with a few guests at the table so our turkeys are always 20lbs or better. The largest turkey we bought was 20 lb and a few ounces for just $4.83. It's one of those sales where you can buy only a certain amount per day soooooooooo, you guessed it!...we will shop for these for several days:P Since we already have to be out doing other marketing we just slip in and buy our limit again. (Almost like hunting eh?:P) This also allows us the opportunity to donate quite a few to the local pantry as they will take in frozen meats and such.

   The barrels are getting cleaned and we will be purchasing a few more due to expanding our self sustaining foodstores this year. Although I do keep 50lb bags of flours in two, I am going to be trying keeping whole grains this year since we are trying to eventually ONLY mill it as needed instead of purchasing already milled flour.

   Brother Craig has been layed off for this week (Temporary) as the mill isn't selling all their surplus lumber at this time. Hopefully it won't be longer:s And they may do a mandatory shutdown again at Christmas. We are trying to have a positive heart about all this and are praying that it will be over soon and the lumber sales will pick up. In the meantime we are enjoying having him home all week:)

   With the weather turning colder we are drawn to the inside tasks and really accomplishing so much these last few days. So much more to do but it's looking up:) I've been asked to give a tour of our home so I'll need to get some pictures taken and get them posted here. I will try to get them on in the next few days.

   We are settling in to our winter routines of sitting in the evenings with lapwork, reading, scripture and games. Little stolen moments of working on a Christmas gift here and there and cozy days of steaming soups and fresh breads:)

   Well, it's the middle of the day for me and I had a moment to sit and share a little time with you but I best get back to some things:) Brother Craig is home!

God be with thee!

Sister Lori

WOW thats a great deal on Turkey prices.... Where we are at in OK they dont have anything that great as far as Turkey prices but when we lived in CO you could go to the local Safeway and get 20 + pound turkeys for $5 each( yes you see that right, just $5 dollar turkeys) and we would stock up then. You have a nice blog here and I enjoyed my visit thanks for sharing.

~~~When I was growing up we "grew" our own turkey but we haven't gotten that far on the homestead yet:) We hope to be able to grow our own perhaps next year:)
Safeway often has great deals on their frozen meats. We have to be careful, especially around this time of year, because some of the turkey's have been injected with MSG. Some just have the spices and such injected into them but the MSG makes Brother Craig very sick.
Thank you for blessing me with your kind words over our blog:)
God be with thee!
What a deal on those turkeys. I thought I was getting a deal at $.69 per lb. I had to keep going back to the store because they had a limit of "1" per person. So I went again and again, I will get my turkeys one way or another, LOL
And the way you describe your evenings is out of a story book, thanks for the vision..............Kitty
I am looking forward to seeing your home tour.
I am soo afraid of the msg being put into the foods, it is not good for a person.I too want to raise turkeys.We do raise chickens for the meat and eggs so adding a few turkeys is something I should do.
I have been thinking about grinding my own flour but I don't know where I will buy the grains. I will do a little more research and hopefully I will soon be grinding my own.
I, too look forward to the home tour. Where are you getting them for .23 a pound? The cheapest I have found is .59 a pound. That is a great deal. I would be buying them up to.
Blessings,
