The Sounds of Silence

Blessings!

Over the last few days we've been greatly enjoying and training our grandsons. I will share more on that tomorrow once I get pictures uploaded onto the computer:) It has been a joy yet a challenge too. The good Lord has definitely given us quite the task.

Lots of folks that we talk to are often amazed how little we make noise around here...what I mean by that is, we don't have regular television (we have DVD's and we only watch an evening or two a week), we don't have stereo reception (it's only use is for the movies), we aren't out and about running from one obligation to another (sports, dance etc) and such. In fact, those same folks feel compelled to defend their choice to have these things in their home. They say things like, "I just have it on for background noise", "I don't really watch/listen to it". And always the big question..."How can you stand all that silence?"

   I can only smile:)

You see, our home is far from silent. Aside for the obvious like children, animals and such, there is much more sound than a television can put out:) Yes...Silence has a sound:)

When the house is quiet, I can hear the sweet whispers of the girls as they chat in their room or out on the back deck. I can hear the sound of the fishtank in our Sarah's room all the way from upstairs! (This house is huge and our room is a long ways away) This morning I was awakened by the sweet little voice singing to himself in his crib down in our Sarah's room and the older boy whispering down in the kitchen with our Mary-Ann as they schemed about how to get Pappy and Blue Nana down to the lower field for a picnic in the afternoon:)

If that's not enough, I could hear the dog snoring beneath my bed keeping nearly perfect rhythm with my wonderful husbands:) I heard another breathing thing and turned my head to see my cat sleeping on the settee next to the bed. The stairs creak on the 7th step from the top (they all creak but that one is the loudest:P), Pappy's chair, at the table, has one leg that is microscopically longer than all the rest and when it's scooted to the table it makes a sort of squeak sound that no one else seems to hear:P

The pond out front of the house has a beautiful waterfall that sometimes seems so loud I wish I could turn it off...yet most folks never notice it until we point it out:) The fabric on the shelves in my sewing room, right by the garage door, make a soft brushing sound when that door is opened but only if both the yard door and front rollers are closed:)

I could name dozens more but you get the picture:) So the next time someone asks you how you can stand the quiet let them know...it's not quiet...it's just the sounds of silence:)

God be with thee!

Sister Lori

When I was a child I remember asking my mom what it was like when she was growing up. One reply has remained with me. She said it was much quieter during her growing up years.
Like you, we have eliminated tv and watch an occasional movie in our basement. We recently watched The Man From Snowy River and its sequel and enjoyed them thoroughly.
During the warmer months the sounds of birds in our trees is so lovely, I would hate to drown it out!
Have a very blessed weekend!.........Denise (prairiemom)
