~The Smell Of Fall~I understand that it's still very much summer out there right now. The temperature on our mountain is 84 degrees and it's humid...but there is a slight change in the air. Don't ask me to explain it because I can't. ~smile~ It's just a different smell is the best I can do. I noticed it over the weekend while I was sitting outside on my porch swing watching the lightning bugs and listening to the crickets. The smell of fall is in the air, ever so slightly. That certainly explains why I've been a bit ahead of schedule in my desire to store up. Just like a squirrel that busily goes about gathering nuts to stow away for the long winter ahead. I'm way ahead of schedule this year. My canning shelves have just enough room left on them for the tomatoes and some applesauce. My freezer is full of a side of beef...and I only have a few more items to get for quilting before my fabric cupboard is well stocked. Just as God's word says: For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven:....a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted." Ecclesiastes 3:1, 2b The time to 'pluck up' or harvest is quickly coming to an end. The little country fairs are starting to pop up here and there...with the colorful displays of homegrown goodness and pretty patchwork done ever so carefully. Please don't misunderstand me...I love summer. The warm sunny days, the planting and even the weeding. ~smile~ Sitting out on my old porch swing in the evenings enjoying a cup of iced tea and just listening to the night sounds. Watching my newly planted flowers take bloom. Oh, how pretty are those black-eyed susans? Yes, summer is good. But I'm feeling it slip away...and I want to savor each and every last moment of it before it's time for yet another wonderful season.
