Welcome Spring & Spring Chickens

We are well into March and I feel like a butterfly emerging from a dark cacoon. For me it's gone from nothing happening to everything happening at once! Spring is here at my homestead in the country and my clothesline can hold no more as everthing flaps wildly in the breeze today. The grass is freshly mowed and there are spring wreaths on the doors as a perky welcome.

Some little chicks came in this week and that means a flurry of activity around here! We've got 9 that survived and more on the way. They are Ameraucana chicks and are known to be very hardy, sweet natured and they lay "Easter" eggs! Yes, colored eggs in pastel shades of blues, greens and pinkish browns. What fun! Here they are today at 5 days old.

I took a stroll down the hill to snap some pictures of our chickens that we got last year. The view is my favorite of all around our place. These chickens were already a year to two years old when we got them and it was our first experience raising chickens. We've learned a lot and continue to learn of course. These chickens are feather footed Belgian Mille Fluers and some say their itty bitty eggs are the richest tasting eggs of all. We will be adding a second yard and chicken house onto this one for the new chicks when they get older.

And yet even more day old chicks will be shipped on March 26th! We've ordered 6 Rhode Island Red pullets, 3 Rhode Island Red males, 6 Rhode Island White pullets and 6 New Hampshire Red pullets! They are extremely cold hardy and are very productive large brown egg layers. The extra special bonus is that we can breed Rhode Island Red males with Rhode Island White females and they will produce Gold Sexlink chicks, another large brown egg layer. The neat thing is that when they are a day old you can sex them because the females are streaked with red or gold and the males are solid white!
Well I've got so much I want to get done today that I'll have to end my entry here. More to come!

I just got your message on my blog page and i decided to see if you had pics of your babies! How cute they are. We got ours when they were a bit older so we didn't get to go through the cute chick stage. The orpingtons we ordered will be this small though. Good luck with your chickie adventures!
