Friday, April 6, 2007The Q & A meme going around:Posted in Our SchoolingQ: Do your children have gym/Phys. Ed? A: We live on a large homestead, so there are no lackings in physical education activities. The children spend more time outside in play and farm tasks than inside most often. Q: The BIG question: What about socialization? A: Socialization is a bit over-rated, I think. Are we socialized with others herded into a classroom and all of the same age? Nope. We are socialized daily with talking to our neighbors, going to town and speaking with others (of all ages) at the store, the library, etc. Our children are capable of having conversations with anyone they meet of any age. We have church, we have a community, we have extended family and we have a large number of siblings. I think they are far more 'socialized' than the average PS student. Q: Do your children miss public school? Do your children enjoy homeschooling? A: Only my oldest 2 have attended a public school setting, and they have not missed it at all, and will be the first to tell you so. If we did not enjoy homeschooling, and feel incredibly blessed to do so and have this time with our children, it would show, and we might have made other choices instead. Q: How long do you plan on homeschooling? A: As we fully believe that The Lord has commanded us and called us (and everyone, truly) to taking over the education of our children, we plan to do so through all of their schooling years. Q: Do your kids get snow days? A: LOL...they used to. If we get snow here now, we will certainly take the day off to enjoy the rarity of it all, at least the first day. Q: Do the kids get sick days? A: If they are truly sick and it isn't a character issue to deal with, of course they do. It serves me no purpose to "force" schooling at them when they are too ill to comprehend or retain the information learned that day. Most often, though, they are well enough for at least some reading and math facts. Q: Do your kids get days off? A: Typically, we average 3 weeks of work and 1 week off each month. We do have planting season, then harvest and canning season, where limited schooling (textbook point of view) is done. There are educational opportunities in everything we do on the homestead, so the are never really"off" school. Q: Do your kids get Spring Break? A: No, we don't take a designated set of time off for "spring break" as it were, but in the spring we are in the garden prepping and planting. Q: Do you school year round? A: Yes, we have a year-round schedule here. As subjects are tested out of for a grade level, we simply move on to the next grade in that area. We don't have any 'set" first or last day of schooling. Q: Do you grade them? Do you test them? A: Yes, in a way we do. They score their work daily most often (some weekly) and correct all problems and areas that are incorrect, then study that portion again so I know they truly understand it. By the end of the subject/grade, they have earned an A in most subjects. If they still just "don't get it" we take a different approach to that area and work on learning it fully. There are some things that some children may never really "get" but any true 100% effort is an 'A' in our book. | 1 comments | Link Leave a Comment { Last Page } { Page 12 of 26 } { Next Page } |
