Taking your Husband's Name

Posted in Scripture Studies
The Facts Behind Tradition
"The covenantal nature of marriage explains why women give up their last names and take the last names of their husbands. This is not just an old-fashioned tradition. Just as God 's people take on the name of their divine husband when they are united to him, so the woman takes on the name of her husband in marriage.

"A woman's change of name signifies a change of headship. She comes into the world with the last name of her father. Of course, today feminists insist on retaining their maiden name, that is, their father's name. This is not some quaint way of honoring their fathers ~ it is in fact an attack on the covenantal nature of marriage, an attack on the nature of headship. The father is the head of the woman until she gets married. But at marriage she gains a new head, her husband, and this is signified by taking his name." by Steve Wilkins

Note: I find this quote makes a very important point. I was once one of those women with the double last name. Before I came to know the Lord, I was a feminist and I wanted to keep my old identity. I hyphenated my maiden name with my first husband's family name. He didn't like that I wanted to do this, but I felt it wasn't his decision. I didn't think I was doing any harm at the time, but now I don't think it's right at all. Steve Wilkins explains it quite well. I hope that if you have a hyphenated last name, or if you haven't taken your husband's name, this will influence you to change your mind.

**just a note: I signed up for this through another site and have really enjoyed receiving them in my mail.  If you haven't signed up for Donna's mails, please do, they are a blessing.  I also enjoy visiting Laine's Letters as well.
