Taking Captives...

Posted in Scripture Studies
Helping our children think biblically, speak biblically and act biblically is a goal of most Christian parents.  (Just a note to clarify here, I say “Christian” because those who are not of a Christian faith, are not using Biblical principles to raise and train their children.  I see there has been some contention around blogs about that sort of thing.)

To think biblically means to tell ourselves the Truth.  Teaching our children to stand in God’s Truth is one of the most stable gifts of protection we can offer them.  Lies are not so much a dismissal of the truth but a distortion of the truth.  We see the Enemy first hissing out distortions in the Garden of Eden with “Did God really say…?”

Since man first walked on the earth, satan has connived and coerced to infest human minds with doubts and lies.  But God does not leave us weak-willed defenseless pawns -- His Word and His Spirit crush the Father of Lies and his deceitful tactics.  Just look at the arsenal of God found in Ephesians 6:10-17:
Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.
Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the
rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil
day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and
having on the breastplate ofrighteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel
of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery
darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the
word of God  ….

God wraps us “with the belt of truth” (v 14) to counter the Enemy’s lies.  As parents, we aim to teach out children who they are in Christ and how they can protect themselves with His Truth.  As we commit our everyday lives and work to God, in the spiritual realm, He literally establishes our very thoughts.
I love this quote by Francis P. Martin, from the book Hung by The Tongue:
Thoughts are the original ideas.  Imaginations are the image, and strongholds are a result of thoughts that come to reality.  The stronghold is what controls you if you allow it to.  Jesus has given you full authority over your thinking, but you have to take the authority and stay in authority.  It is an act of your will.  An imagination is an intent to do something about what you've been thinking, and a stronghold is when the choice is not yours anymore, but you have submitted your will to the thought itself.

We have even more admonition from 2 Corinthians 10:5 to "take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ."  Taking captive our thoughts is not always easy for us, but we have a wonderful reminder in Philippians 2:13 that it is "God who is at work in you."  God Himself gives us the discernment and strength to reign in our thoughts.

Self Lies:                                                                  God's Truth for Us:
I just can't help it when I fail.                                       2 Corinthians 9:8
I always feel defeated, so  I must be.                           1 Corinthians 15:57
I feel paralyzed with fear at times.                                2 Timothy 1:7
I see no results in my day-to-day when I
walk in the truth.                                                        Galatians 3:11
I'll never change; I'll always fail.                                    Psalm 138:8
I'm so weary; I don't have the strength to go on.            Prov. 10:29
I'm not capable of this task, even though
God has called me to do it.                                         Philippians 4:13
I blew it again!  How can God keep
forgiving me over and over?                                          1 John 1:9
I feel so stupid.  I'm so worthless.                                Genesis 1:26-27
                                                                                 Isaiah 49:15-16
I feel so overwhelmed at times.  I feel
like I'm losing my mind.                                               Isaiah 26:3
I quit.  No one cares about what I do for God.                1 Corinthians 15:58
I can't be used by God unless I'm strong.                      2 Corinthians 12:9
I have to be perfect to be accepted.                              1 John 1:8
I need everyone's approval in my life.                            Colossians 3:23-24
                                                                                 Galatians 1:10
Life should be easy.                                                    John 16:33
I feel so sinful, even after asking forgiveness.
I must not be saved, or sincere enough.                        Romans 8:1
I deserve to strive for happiness in my life
and get it.                                                                   Matthew 10:39
