Baking DayI am not sure how you other homemakers have been doing on your baking days, but because of the heat I have tried to make some changes because of heating up the house. I was use to making my bread 2-3 times a week but now I have resorted to doing most of it in one day and freezing the rest for use later in the week. Although I really would rather not freeze it and eat it fresh, 110 degrees is just been way to hot to do that. It’s not so much hot in the kitchen while I am baking, rather it heats the house up and stays that way all day, and doing this several times a week is too much right now in this heat wave. Another thing that heats up a house is running the clothes dryer. So I have been making good use of that homemade laundry soap (what a blessing!) And hangin’ my clothes outside to dry, which in this heat, is about dry in 10 minutes! I am wondering though, how long it will take them 2 pups to figure out that there is great sport in pulling down clothes off the line -lol. Yesterday I managed to make up several loaves of bread (honey wheat , cinnamon swirl) and am itching to make some artisan breads as soon as it cools off. I also made 2 reuben breads , if you are not sure about them there is a picture in my photos that shows how this is done. And my daughters and I had one loaf for lunch (we had the 3 wee ones she was babysitting as well) Tommorrow is the first day back to our homeschool co-op and we will take the other for lunch. I also made a couple wheat pizza crusts and put in the freezer. On baking day I always make up my sweetie his favorite cookies that I found on the Urbanhomemakers site that are called "double chocolate mint treasures" and my dh just loves them -so I love to make them for him. I have to start a little early to mill up all the flour to use for the day and on my older Hobart it takes a little longer than one of the new nicer mills that are stand alone. Mine is just an attachment that I put on my Hobart -but I really like it though. I have been using it for several months now and I do believe we will never buy bread again. I guess there is nothing like good ol’fashioned bread! { Last Page } { Page 365 of 368 } { Next Page } |
