I can't wait to hear the answers because I struggle with this too! Sometimes I don't answer on my blog but send a PM to the person that asked the question. I don't know what the proper way to handle it is!

Actually there's no RIGHT way, but you can just find what works best for you. Generally I think it's nice to answer in your own comments that way others can see your response and perhaps keep the dialogue going.

Of course you could also comment on that person's blog or send them a message letting them know that you responded to their question in your comment section. It's just totally up to you.

Once people see that you answer questions in your own comments though they'll kind of know to expect to check back later for a response. :o)

I prefer a private message or post to my blog to let me know to check out a person's response to my comments--if they want me to know that they responded. I don't generally re-read people's posts to read comments. There are so many posts to try to keep up with! I'm sure anything is acceptable--but if you want to be sure someone reads your response to them, it's probably best to let them know about it--just in case ;)
