today was a quiet dayToday was quiet with just my daughter and I at home.. I washed 4 loads of laundry mostly fabric that needed to be washed.. I sewed a slip and long skirt for my daughter but was really getting frustrated with the sewing machine.. Every time I reversed stitched it broke the thread. I have a pretty new machine and had changed needles. I dont know what is going on and I was so ready to quit.. Does anyone have any suggestions why it would be doing this? It is cooler and cloudy today and it is perfect to have windows open. We run two air units but I hate the moist feeling in the air.. With just fans on its really nice. Hubby and 2 boys are hauling hay and cutting down hay at the dairy today.. My oldest is helping his grandpa everyday run tractors or combine or big trucks.. depends on the day.. One of my best friends became a grandma at age 36 yesterday.. The baby girl is so cute and sweet.. Mom and baby are doing fine. Well not much else for today.. Have to figure out what is for evening meal tonight and gather the clothes and fabric on the lines Have a great rest of the day.. Homegrown DinnerI made a yummy salad tonight from the garden. It had green onions, red sails lettuce, swiss chard and beet greens. I made up some ranch dressing from scratch and threw in some chives. I had a few leftover cooked shrimp that Rod had caught and sent down for me. Fresh shrimp are SO good! This is the first time I've had swiss chard and I really like it!
Tonight I started moving dirt into the last two garden beds. I filled up the skinny one first to satisfy that part of me that needs to have immediate gratification. Then I hauled a few loads into the big bed - I have a ways to go on that one. Once the skinny bed was full, I planted eight of the red currant bushes that I rooted from thinnings this spring. I just had them in water to see if they would get roots - which they did! I have 18 more of them that I think I will plant in pots for now until I decide where they should go. Last night I potted up some strawberry starts. The runners take over the garden paths pretty quickly - I and just hate to pulll them up and throw them in the compost, seems like such a waste. So I dig up the ones that really have roots and plant them in little 3" pots. I also try to pot as many extra runners as I can. I set out a bunch of little pots on a bench at the end of the strawberry bed. I picked up some runners that had little plants starting and put one in each pot, using a rock to hold the runner down until the plant establishes some roots. Once the plant is secure, I will cut it from the runner. Then I will start again with more pots. Strawberry plants make a good barter item :o) I've been thinking about trying to propagate some blueberry bushes. There are some really productive ones over by one of the storage buildings. I have some powdered rooting hormone that I could use, or I may trim some willow branches from the tree across the street and try that. Maybe I should try both and see which one works best. There are blueberry bushes everywhere along the side of the road, but it would be nice to have a good, productive patch of my own. Then I won't have to worry about someone else finding my favorite picking spot :o) Things look pretty good in the garden. The red currants are just starting to turn pink. I have two baby zucchini. The potato plants look good. I pulled up some radishes and green onions and sent up to Rod in Skagway. The strawberries are loaded with unripe berries and more blossoms. The raspberry patch is buzzing - lots of bumble bees on the blossoms. The new rhubarb patch looks great - I think the plants must have reached down into the layer of chicken manure I put in that bed - they have really taken off in the last week. In the greenhouse, I have one little green pepper and a bunch more babies just starting to form. Nothing on the cucumbers yet, but they are getting bigger - I need to put up a trellis for them. The 3 tomato plants are getting huge - there are 6 little fruits forming now. I notice though that some of the leaves are turning yellow, brown and dry on the ends. I need to look that up and see what is going on with them - must be something about being too cold, too much water, or not enough ventilation is my guess. I picked some mint leaves and calendula blossoms and dehydrated them to use in my soaps. The chickens are doing good - getting only 3 or 4 eggs per day though. If they don't pick up soon, we will be putting them in the freezer. Tropical Montana
This pair of swallows is nesting in the corner of my garden in a bird house I put up last year. I have definitely noticed a reduction in the mosquito population.
Tending the house below.
Here's one of the babies looking out at me. There are at least 2 in the bird house. Who couldn't love that face?
The parents, keeping a watchful eye.
This last one I took by sticking the camera lense inside the opening of the bird house. It came out dark, so I tweaked it a bit. You can make out one of the babies.
I am back~ Just such a busy 6monthsI am back and going strong... I have a wonderful garden that has given me so much so far. We have 4 rows of potatoes and just one that we dug up gave us 50 lbs of tators... I have started canning veggies and my goal is to totally have enough put up that we dont go to the grocery store for a very long time. I started calculating how much we would save as a family doing this and we should save over a 1000 dollars this year... I have went back to cooking healthy old fashioned meals that dont require much meat.. If you would like to see the figures I came up with just let me know.. I plan to opt out Walmart completely if I can.. Buying locally from small stores and making all my cleaning supplies,,, Have a blessed week!~Family, Friends and Food for the Fourth (nd an update too)Well I just got notification that my side of the family is having a big BBQ at my brother's house on the evening of the Fourth. I am thrilled since hubby's family is all busy and doing their own thing. His mother and father will be at their church's 3 day meeting, his oldest sister is in Washington and unable to come home but will be home in a few weeks for Grandma's 90th bday, and his youngest sister and her hubby and daughter are in California at Disney! Of course I asked what I could bring and my SIL told me maybe a salad or a dessert. So I plan on taking both. LOL Not sure what kind of salad to take, and I have a simple dessert recipe I will make (it is red white and blue). Hamburgers and hotdogs on the grill sound so good right now. And I know several of the other dishes will be potato salad and baked beans, etc. One gal there doesn't cook, so she usually brings the pop, or ice and sometimes a large tub of icecream depending on what we are all having. We aren't shooting off any fireworks there though. One of the twins is scared of fireworks, 2 of the other kids are with their dad for the weekend and won't be there either. So it is the one if the twin who likes fireworks, and Noah, who is only 3 but loved them last year, so I unless he decides to change his mind, LOL, I think he will be ok with them again this year. After the BBQ, several of us will drive back to town and watch the citywide fireworks display at the lake. We won't buy much this year....maybe some snappers, some smoke bombs, and some other smaller items for Noah. I just can't see spending alot of money on big bangs this year when we have so many things we could spend the money instead. Matthew got called today for a small electrical job. The guy wants an electrical hookup for a camper put in behid his barn by this weekend. So Matthew is running a little late tonight getting that done. He was hoping it was a 10 minute job, but knows things happen and it might take longer. Oh well, we need the money to take care of part 2 of fixing my car's air conditioning. (Part one was putting in a new fan, which he did last night. Part 2 is??? LOL I have no idea. I know the fan works now but no cold air. Maybe it needs freon?? Who knows. That is hubby's job) I have discussed having a yard/garage sale and then canceled it thinking I would just have an auction (a HS friend has an auction business and is going to hold a consignment auction), but now I am thinking I should just open up a Ebay shop, and possibly put some stuff on Etsy as well.I think in the long run I will end up getting more money for the items. I will just advertise that I go to the post office once or twice a week, etc. so I don't have to go every single day. That would be crazy. On days I have many packages, I will ask a girlfriend to watch Noah, or drop him off for an hour at grandma's shop. Speaking of grandma's shop.....she has offered me one of her large display windows to put items in if wanted. I told her I would speak to Matthew, pray about it and get back to her. I know I won't make alot of money from it, because her shop is kind of out of the way, and not many people walk around there either. However, the customers that come into her shop for Speech (She is a Speech Pathologist) might see something and buy it, or order one in a different color, tell their friends, etc. I was thinking of putting some vintage items in the window, and making up some aprons and shaggy blankets to display and sell there. I am getting excited about the opportunity to make some money to help with household items and Christmas, etc. When I get the shops up and running, I will post the addresses here for all of you!!! Matthew (who is the king of putting things off, starting projects and then not finishing them, etc.) has turned a new leaf. I am not sure what happened, but I am not about to ask and screw this up. LOL Projects like Noah's bedroom upstairs that have sat for over 3 years without being finished are now being worked on! He comes home from work and instead of colasping in his chair with the laptop, he asks if there is anything I need him to do! Mostly it is small stuff like, take out the trash, take this box upstairs, etc. But recently he has fixed part of the air conditioning on the car, fixed the leaky roof, replaces a filter on the furnace/air conditioner, and my favorite, bought and hung a ceiling fan in Noah's new bedroom!!! The later was all his idea and he was so pleased to be able to buy the fan with his extra money coming in from electrical jobs. :) Makes me smile to see this part of Matthew blossoming. Noah has been talking up a storm!!! I can't believe in the last couple of months since his birthday screening in April, how much he has developed. He is definately not the same little boy. He is doing better every day. Last night I told Matthew that he had been talking up a storm all day long and learning new words every day. Later on Matthew said, how do you turn HIM off?? LOL We both had a great laugh over that one. The little boy that wouldn't talk earlier except for mom, dad, cookie, candy, etc. little words, is now talking 4 word sentences, answering questions with words instead of sign language, and asking for items instead of pointing and grunting. God is so good to us. I love this little guy. And yes, there are times you want to turn him off still. LOL But most of the time, I love hearing him talk (now not only in English but a little Spanish and Chinese due to a few tv shows he watches) Well, that's all for now. I should go. Are You A Cheerleader?Ok, I'll admit it. I was never a cheerleader. I was the mascot. I've always enjoyed playing dress up and if I am given the chance now, I still would. When my daughter played basketball in high school, I wanted to secretly be the mascot for one game and not let her know, but this post isn't about that kind of cheerleading. I am talking about the kind of cheerleader who in everyday life is an encouraging person. I've decided that we all need at least one cheerleader in our lives and that we should endeavor to be cheerleaders every day. Just think of the positive impact you might have on someone's life. I have some friends who respond rather luke-warmly (OK, coldly) about my plans and projects. I'll admit it. It hurts. There are just some things a person gets excited about and wants to share and then the old eyes roll or the "why would you want to do that" comes out of their mouths......or the silent treatment. They say nothing. I always wonder what is going on in their heads, but I am just better off not knowing. I feel that jealousy and envy are a big part of those responses. These people are not very good cheerleaders and actually drag me down, way down. Then there's my cheerleader friend who responds with "YOU GO GIRL!" She's always encouraging. If there is ever any criticism, it's more like a cautious critique. More like advice. She always makes me feel like I can do anything. You choose. Do you want to be a cheerleader or a bottom feeder, dragging everyone down with you? The way you respond can make or break a person's whole day. Vanilla Ice CreamI recently made vanilla ice cream and it was delicious!! I wanted to share my recipe with you. You can now find all my ice cream recipes (eggless recipes and non dairy too) and ice cream making directions here: http://www.thefamilyhomestead.com/makinghomemadeicecream.htm If I have more recipes to post I will be adding them to that page. Vanilla Ice Cream
6 eggs In a big mixer (like a Kitchen Aid or Bosch) mix together (with the wire whip) the eggs and cane juice crystals until light and lemony colored. Add vanilla and mix again. Add cream and arrowroot powder (if using). When all of this has mixed together completely pour it into your 1 gallon ice cream maker container. Add whole milk until you reach the "fill line" on your ice cream maker container. Follow the instructions that came with your ice cream maker or click on the above link for general instructions. Summer is here!Gianni finally heard that the contract was finalized yesterday! He will be back to work in Sad news- My new horse, Golden Girl, died of a heart attack a couple of weeks ago. It was quite a shock! She was fine in the morning and we found her dead in the afternoon, with her buddy, Aki, standing next to her. She was 22 years old. We will miss her! My oldest daughter, Stephanie, had just gotten a new horse a few days before. Dias is a sweet, gentle ½ Haflinger 6 year old stallion. I can’t believe I have another stallion. He really is like no other stallion I have ever been around. Steph took him on two large organized trail rides and camped out with him. He was a perfect gentleman even while surrounded by assorted mares in heat and other stallions. She is doing very well with him and I ride him occasionally, as well. I have time to sit and update everyone because I sent my DH and kids to the beach for a few days for MY holiday! I was supposed to go, too, but I could really use the peace & quiet! It is working out nicely. They are having fun and I am getting a break! My 9 yr old, mildly retarded, niece will be coming to stay with us for ten days on Friday to give her parents a vacation. We enjoy her visits, but I am glad to have some time to recharge my batteries before she gets here! We plan to go camping on my favorite island for a week after she goes home. I hope everyone has a great summer! My prayers are going out for everyone. Melanie in Greece My recipe blog: http://www.homesteadblogger.com/melskitchen/ My website: http://www.avravounou.gr Bulk Taco Seasoning MixWe are having taco salad for dinner tonight. I always cook up my hamburger and add taco seasonings to it before adding it to my salad. I realized this morning I was out of taco seasoning and it was time to make more. This is another product that I make myself now. We are not real big fans of the taste of the taco seasonings I use to buy from my health food co-op and I wonder about MSG in it as well (the grocery store stuff definitely is full of yucky things typically). I recently was reading an article (wish I could remember where now.. maybe Dr. Taco mix is so easy to make. It takes less than 15 minutes to make up a batch, the recipe doubles easily. I usually make a double batch but today I did not have enough dried onion, so I settled for a single batch. Bulk Taco Seasoning Mix
¾ c dried onions Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix well. Store in plastic or glass container with a lid. It takes approx. 3T of this mix to equal one packet that you would buy in the store. This recipe makes about 2 cups. I store it in a canning jar in my cupboard.
Peas and CherriesBeen super busy here on the homestead. Been picking and freezing peas. Did over 27 qt bags of flat snow peas for stir frys and gave away 2 gallon bags to a friend. Also did 2 qt bags of shelled peas last week. I think I will have a ton more today when I pick.Got cherries for 60 cents a pound and bought 88lbs! Gave about 15lbs away to family and to a few families DH works with at church. But that still left us with over 70lbs. Last night DH and I pitted about 50 lbs. We are freezing them and then flash freezing them for future cherry shakes! Will also flash freeze some with pits for ltitle popsicles for the kids. They love these in the winter and will spit the pit out. I had a dear friend call last night ask me if I wanted 20 more pounds of cherries free. I said sure.......I am a little looney if you ask me...Plan on canning these. It has really turned hot. In the 90's all week long. Hopeing to get our pool FINALLY set up. Doesnt seem to be a priority for some, it is for me, I am hot! { Last Page } { Page 2 of 5 } { Next Page } |
