Sugar Bend Farm

Maybe we should have named him Samson instead of Noah

I have a 2 1/2 year old (enough said?)  He has decided that he doesn't want to have his hair cut.  I took him a few weeks ago to have it done, and he pitched a fit.  Kicked, pushed, cried, and just really gave a good show. I felt the eyes of the other patrons on me.  I can only imagine they were thinking, "can't she control her child?"  But if I had resorted to spanking him, someone would have called CPS and reported me for abuse!! So the lady did what she could to make it look halfway decent.  I could feel her frustration and general displeasure with having to deal with it, so I tipped her well, thanked her and left...

I have tried at home to trim it up, but no deal.  I am afraid to take him back to a shop, because of the fit he pitched before.  And when I tell him we are going to get his hair cut, he starts insisting he doesn't want to get it cut.  He is like the rest of us, blessed with a full head of hair that grows really fast.  So it looks really messy right now.  I wish I had the answers.  I don't know what to do.  I don't like to spank, I have tried it before with him, but it doesn't work.  So if it doesn't do the job of changing the behavior, why just continue to use it.  I have never agreed with spanking children anyway. I don't think young children understand why the person that they depend on...the person who is suppose to be there to protect them, is causing them pain. I believe discipline is needed, and direction, but it varies with the child.  Some things work with one that won't work with another.  All three of mine were different in that way. That is just my thinking on the subject. For what it is worth.

I am thinking that maybe if my husband takes him and holds him, maybe he will sit still for him.  Hopefully it will work, otherwise, we will have a long-haired hippy child on our hands.  Hopefully this is just a stage and not a glimpse of things to come as he gets older...

Oh i know how you feel ! Yesterday, I went into a clothing store to get two shirts for myself and my younger three were uncontrollable. Two ran around. This was so embarrasing. And like you said if you discipline them in public you are the one that gets in 'trouble'. Needless to say they did get spankings when we got home, and my husband also disciplined them for the disrespect they showed me.
I do have to say in their defense that this is not the norm. But as they say kids will be kids and once they decide to do something sometimes its impossible to stop them at the moment.

we are lucky that a good family friend cuts hair. we had the same problem with our oldest 2 (the youngest does not yet have enough hair to cut!). What helped was watching their friends (my friends children) sit up in the chair and get a "haircut" by their mom, and then having their own turn. Sometimes we still have to get our hair done first so that they remember it doesn't hurt, and sometimes it is a threat - "you cannot play with your friends until you get your hair done."
also, the term "haircut" - cuts hurt. he cannot play with scissors or knives, because they can hurt him, but you are taking him to CUT his HAIR! so we changed the term - for my daughter - we are going to go to M's house to get our hair "pretty" and for my son - "to look like daddy's hair"
just some things that helped us.

My son and dil brought our 18 mo. old grandson over yesterday with the cutest "little man" haircut. He loves a particular Elmo movie so she put that in and sat him in his highchair in front of the tv and let him get engrossed in the movie before cutting it. He hardly knew what was going on.
