Gardening challenge of the day

Well here is my challenge for the day.  Andrew is coming home this evening to work in the back yard.  To do some mowing and such.  We have these planters that need work.  The winter was cruel to them along with the dogs.  Our Golden loves to lay in these planters.  So we have to come up with a way to keep him out of them.  We are going to add top soil back to them and plant something in them and we need a solution for keeping the dogs out of them.  I have attached a photo to show what I am talking about.  We need something that will fill the space well and something that is low maintance.  The planter is in the bricked area that goes around the parameter of the sunroom.  Anyone have any suggestions.  I have to go after lunch to find something.  Thanks!
