Labor Day

Labor Day was the first free day my family has had together in a long time.  Or it seems that way anyway, so what to do?   We decided to do something that we have been talking about doing for several months.  We went digging for Diamonds!  We have the wonderful fortune to live about 2 hours from The Crater of Diamonds State Park , the only site in the world where the public can go in and dig for diamonds and keep what they find.  We have reading up on it and my husband happen to work with a guy here, Glen Wortington, who is a diamand digging enthusiast who also wrote a book about hunting diamonds at the Crater of Diamonds State Park.  I'll have to find the book and I will add the name of the book, I think my husband took it with him to work today.  Anyway, now my husband is hooked.  We all had a great day, except for my oldest dd.  She isn't into getting dirty!  Sometimes I wonder where she came from.  She doesn't share our enthusiasum for the farm, any aspect of it.  She is a "city girl" caught in a country loving family.  Anyway, she was  a good sport and went along, but sat on the bench at the are where you wash and sift your dirt, and read magazines.  She did help with Noah some, well, just a little bit.   Besides her, the rest of us had a ball.  We are planning on breaking out the tents and camping supplies and going back for a long weekend and camping out in the camp site and getting up early and hunting for diamonds.  Not that it would ever make us rich, but the thrill of the hunt is awesome.  I can almost see how addictive it must have been back 1849 during the California gold rush.  Just the thought that there out there and you can actually go and dig them out for yourself.  Wow!  Of course, we didn't find diamonds Monday, but we were all together, out in the fresh air of the countryside, doing physical work, and loving it.  We took a picnic lunch and ate outside and just had a great day.  Of course the leisure 2 hour drive there and back was also relaxing and enjoyable.  Precious moments that will be memories to look back on when the kids are grown.  I have memories from the 1970's when my parents brought me to the Crater of Diamonds State Park and we looked for diamonds for a little while.  Of course the years have brought changes to the place, but I can remember vividly the excietment of it all as a child.  My parents are planning a trip back up to visit us soon and we are planning to take everyone out there and do a little digging.  It should be a great trip.
