Aprons

Like I told you... I have been excitedly sewing again.  I am so happy. :)
I decided the other night to make myself a new apron.  I like the smock type of aprons so I went for that.  This one is modified a bit from my original purple smock that I love.  This fabric was my Grandmothers/Nannie Red's.  I only had a smallish remnant and sadly the smock is a bit too short for me.  I am considering what I want to do with it now... try and sell it in my Etsy or possibly wait and see if I can refashion it to make it work somehow.
I LOVE  how it turned out... the colors are wonderful and vibrant and I adore the fabrics.
I finished the edges with bias tape and made 2 pockets on the front... perfect for clothes pins on wash day or running out to the garden to pick a few peppers. The rick rack was a tribute to a dear friend of mine and I just love it. :)
I hope to find the time to get back in the sewing room again soon... to make one equally as cute that I can wear. I LOVE my aprons, I love wearing them... I actually do wear them.  Putting one on helps me feel ready to get to work. :)
Here is a little something a friend sent me about aprons, I was reminded of it when I saw it on a message board that I frequent...

Grandma's Apron

The principal use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath, because she only had a few, it was easier to wash aprons than dresses and they used less material, but along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven.

It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears.

From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.

When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids.

And when the weather was cold, grandma wrapped it around her arms.

Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove.

Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron.

From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls.

In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees.

When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.

When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner.

It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that 'old-time apron' that served so many purposes.

REMEMBER:

Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the window sill to cool. Her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill to thaw.

They would go crazy now trying to figure out how many germs were on that apron. I don't think I ever caught anything from an apron !

Have a wonderful day.

Cute, cute, CUTE! I love it. I'm glad you are sewing again. :-)
Oh, and I see that you didn't receive your Christmas card, because it came back to me over the weekend. *SOBS* I'm so very sorry! I will definitely be watchful of the shape of card I send next year. What a disappointment! You may be getting a "just because" card someday, soon!

Sew cute ;)

That is adorable!! Is it just a little too short? How about a pleated ruffle along the bottom on front and back? It would be too froufy because it would be pleated instead of gathered. I just love that little pocket at the top!!

Love you!

Hope Chest ?

Hi Dearest Chas, Love, Love, the apron. I have been putting aside things for my daughters hope chest. What about saving this apron for one of your girls. Make another one and save one for both of them. I know it seems a long time off but time does fly by. I read the book; The Hope Chest, A Legacy of Love by Rebekah Wilson. I ordered it from Vision Forum. I read parts of it and then read it aloud to my daughter in her teens. Quite a lovely tradition, Hope Chests. God Bless and I am hoping to catch your sewing bug. My daughter needs a new dress for a Regency era ball she and my son are attending at the end of the month. Much Blessings to you. Cynthia

Very Cute Apron!

I love the apron. It's very cute. Very good colours too.

I love it when I read the story of Grandma's apron. I love the end I think the most. If only we were as efficient in what we did as the pioneers were, we would be much better off.

Hope you are having a lovely day.
Love,
Rachel

If I were you and the fabric held sentimental value, I would take off the bias tape and add some length with a fabric similiar to the pocket. Or you could save it for Cameo or Carlie Jean.

Lovely apron!

Wonderful apron you made. Please don't part with it due to sentimental reasons. Such a treat.

All the best,

Love it!!!

What a wonderful apron, I love the fabric too! If it's too short would adding a band of the pocket fabric as a border to the bottom of the apron help? It could also serve as yet another pocket in the front for more clothespins or whatever! LOL

Great job on sewing this cute apron, you're very talented!

Blessings,
Sher

Great Job Chas!
It looks very old fashioned.........and very useful.
I got a pattern on Monday just like it! Hobby Lobby had all their Simplicity patterns for a dollar. (I got 5!)
I like aprons because they remind me of quilts and you can't hang a quilt from a hook in your kitchen, so that's why I make aprons!

Hi, The apron turned out beautiful. I should try making a smock style but will have to get a pattern. I have made other kinds of aprons. The pencil case is a great idea too. Blessings.
