Back from Amish country

Posted on Tue 7 Mar 2006 at 12:29

Well, what a beautiful trip that was. My hubby and I left thursday morning and took my son to my parents house, and dropped him off. Then we headed out for berlin ohio. Amish country. I have always had a facination with this life style. If not just amish, the plain and simple lifestyle. As I learned things on this trip, my eyes were truley opened to the fact that this is the way God had inteneded us to live. Plain simple, lifes of service to Christ. To be hard working, generous, humble, loving, gentle, quiet, and honest. Oh what a joy. Ok back to my trip.

We ended up leaving my parents at about 10:00 am (they live in grand rapids michigan) So we drove back to our house for a stop to pick up all our stuff, and headed out about and hour later. The snow started and the weather was yucky. So we did not get to drive the speed limit, it was mostly 50 , then had road construction(which is nothing new in michigan) so some detours. We ended up coming into ohio, on some back roads on our way to berlin, Us not knowing that ohio was very hilly and mountious. With the snow and semi drivers it was pretty scarey in places. Also ended up stopping at a rest area, (if thats what you would call it a building with two holes in the ground and some toilet seats.(Yuck). Oh well got to do what you got to do. We only ended up going to millersburg. and staying at the comfort inn there. We ended up arriving at 6:30pm. The Comfort Inn was were we ended up staying the whole time we were there, kinda in the middle of everything, and very affordable.

After we check in on thursday we stopped at Burger King for dinner(oh I know not very amish) It was close and we were hungry. Then we went to walmart to do some wandering around. It was a super Walmart, (WITH A HITCHING POST) ok so we knew we had arrived in amish country. As we go into the store, everyone is wearing coverings or the amish capp. Well I did not have mine one because I have been trying to find a nice one. I felt like a fool. That super walmart was the coolest walmart i have ever been in. It had all the clearance on the outside ailse and the endcaps(which you never see here) All the risky things were in the middle of a department and there was no trashing clothing in that store. Oh the deals we found, we had three huge bags when we left and spen 50.00 not bad. It was also the most amish people or mennonite, or covering baptists I have seen it my whole life. I felt at home.

Then we went back to our room and called it a night.

The next day, we went on a amish tour. I have to say this was the highlight of my trip. We toured all over holmes county, the backroads tour. I bought so much stuff. I found out that a dry good store is for fabrics and not bulk food.. We made a stop at a blind broom makers house, a lady who makes candles, and we learned so much about the amish and mennonite culture. I realized I am not very different from those folks, except that I do not drive a horse and buggy and that I wear plain clothes but not solid fabrics. I was wearing my new covering that day, and the driver asked me If I was german bapist or some other baptists and I said just regular baptists. When I got home, I did some reasearch and I would be german baptist. I do not belong to that church but have all the same belifes.

The next couple of days we drove and stopped at stores and shopes. We went all over. We stopped at a machine auction in kidron. That was fun. I was really out of place being a women there. It was fun though.

I want to go back, I told my husband that we need to pack up and move there. I have never felt so complete and so at home, and so normal in my whole life. I was not the minority but the majority. AMEN. Hubby said there would be no work for him. He is in computers. I could see his point. The simple life. Oh I love it. Now I am trying to make my life as simple as I get it , where I am. Not easy but doable.

If you have any questions, about anything just leave me a note and I will try to answer them as best as I can.

We are planning on going back in the summer with our son. Thats a start.

Have a blessed day, Got to go check on my canning.

I love the Amish! We just moved from Beaverton, MI where there were Amish that lived around there and it was close to Clare. Clare has a big Amish action 2 times a year.

I miss living there!

I am sorry there were no pictures. We were in the car almost all of the time, and when you are surrounded by 80 percent amish, theres not much else to take a picture of. Sorry.

What a lovely trip!

Sounds like you had a wonderful time! What a nice way to spend your anniversary!
We live near the Amish and it is a step back to a simpler time to go riding around there. Our milk cow came from an Amish farm. What a treat it was to get to meet this family and be invited into their home.
Glad you had a great time!!!

Blessings,
Laurie

Sounds great !
I went to an amish community when I visited Missouri during my only trip to the US.
I was 16 but I remember it very well, I bought a pattern to sew amish traditionnal rag doll (the ones without faces) and I still have 2 of this dolls...
I'm quite fascinating by the plain people and I'm sure they're much wiser than most of us modern folks
Blessings
