creepy sounds

What is the strangest sound you can hear when you live in the country? Silence. Last night before going to bed we had the threats of severe thunderstorms and possible tornadoes. So we did the usual thing, but it is only usual when really bad stuff is predicted.  We let a couple of the horses in pens with no cover out into the yard, put the ones we could in barn stalls, covered hay and battened down the hatches. Put the oil lamps and matches in a convenient place in case the power went out (the power always goes out when you live in the country) made sure the flashlights had batteries that were charged, made sure we had several jugs of water stored, and made a place for all the youngins to sleep downstairs. the normal routine for springtime in the country. Left the windows open because it felt good and to hear what was going on, and went to bed. And then the worst happened, I was awakened by the sound of …..SILENCE. Now let me tell you that is not a normal sound. I barely heard the windchimes barely move twice all night long, that is unusual enough. But what was really weird was the stillness. We live on a horse farm with way too many stallions (that needs to change soon) think 15 teenage boys in one small cabin, and you will maybe understand what too many stallions on one farm sounds like. Some noise is not only normal but expected. We also have 4 good hardworking guard dogs, who take their job seriously. We also have chickens and a rooster, and a noisy milk cow and a creek with frogs in it right next to the house. So night farm sounds are normal. But last night it was silent, completely silent all night. No barking, no neighing or nickering or stallions trying to establish pecking order. No owls hooting, frogs singing or crickets chirping. No mooing, or rooster crowing. Not even a meow. And no storm, but you could feel it was out there, lingering in the distance. It was creepy, so creepy I got no sleep. AAHH life in the country.
