I have been so crazy busy that I haven't had much time for the computer but I figured I would stop by and show you what I have been up to. I have taken on the task of re-decorating my house. Painting, border and all that jazz. My husband and I have also been working on replacing parts of the roof before winter.

I finally ripped up the nasty tile in my bathrooms and replaced it!!! HALLELUJAH I was so sick of that 10 cents a piece tile that was chipping and looked so dirty. I have good tile now PRAISE GOD!!! I ripped the pedestal sink out too! You cannot have a pedestal sink with a 8 member family. My mother and I found a good cabinet sink at a garage sale and my husband installed it.

I have also been working on restoring my old wood stove and hopefully it will be in the house by next weekend.  If so, pics to come.  Although you have seen pics of my home, I figured it would be fun to do a before and after. There was not a lot of sunlight today so my new pictures are not very bright.

Herbalife...Losing Weight a Healthy Way?? Yep it is possible.

My mom has been looking for home based business for her website and she came across a product called Herbalife. Considering she is a Christian woman, she did not want to sell a product without trying it and seeing if it really works or not before trying to sell it to others. Well we have been on it for two days now and my husband has lost 8 pounds, I have lost 5 pounds and my mother has lost 3 pounds. I am just amazed. It follows the guidelines of something like Slim Fast where you drink two shakes a day with one healthy meal a day. The great thing about it is that it is completely natural with vitamins, minerals and herbs. Very low in sugar!  With the protein powder, you stay fuller and don't feel the need to eat. The vitamins and cell activator that coincides with it also helps you lose weight and feel great. This is an amazing product. My mother is using the family for her guinea pigs for a month so I will definitely update in a month. I highly recommend this product to anyone who wants to lose weight and stay healthy at the same time. It also comes with plans for maintaining weight and gaining weight.

Trip to Lancaster County, Pa...Amish Country

My mother and I have always wanted to go on a vacation, just me and her. We finally got our chance when she purchased a vehicle from New Jersey and we had to go pick it up. We were thrilled! As we were making plans for the trip, we realized that we would be going through Lancaster County, Pa. Now mind you, I have read about this place in numerous books...Beverly Lewis, Wanda Brunstetter, etc. Now was my chance to see all the places I read about.

My mother and I decided to stay at a farm bed and breakfast. I got to milk a cow, feed a baby calf, pet different animals, and have my first taste of milk right out of a cow during breakfast. After we left the farm, we ventured out on a 2 or 3 mile buggy ride in Bird in Hand. A lot of scenic pictures were taken during this ride. Shortly after, we rode to a near by farm that sold homemade rootbeer. Let me tell you (this is just my opinion), It smells and taste just like a beer!  Further down the road we stopped at the Bird in Hand Farmers Market where we picked out our souvenirs.

We stopped for lunch after shopping at the Bird in Hand Family Inn and Restaurant. The place was awesome with a little Noah's Ark buffet for children (got a pic) but the food was horrible. I do not recommend it.

Our last stop on the trip was a tour of a old time Amish house and once upon a time fully functional farm. Oh my! It was so awesome. My mom and I did not want to leave. I took so many pictures. I hope you enjoy all of them! For those of you who love old things...I tried to get as many pictures of the kitchen items and old tools as possible. This farm was complete with a house, a summer kitchen (my mom and I fell in love), a tobacco shed, a blacksmith shop, barns, a school house, an outside food dryer, a smokehouse, a dairy barn and so much more. Oh how I would have loved to have ran that farm. Talk about self-sufficient. I would never even go into town!

Go get a cup of coffee, sit back and enjoy my vacation! It is about 6 minutes long, with some music. Make sure you full size it.

Here's where you'll find me these days; it's something I have longed to do for a good while so please keep SGL in your prayers.  I'm also here at HSB2 at Beekeeper Dreams and in the shade of the Front Porch some, too.  School is getting ready to start and you'll find me scratching my head at Jacobs Academy, too.

Y'all Behave!

Been A LONG Time!

It has been so long since I have written on here that I hardly know where to begin. Shortly after my last post, my family and I went on vacation to see my best friend, Tracy, in Missouri. I missed her sooo much and it was great to visit. It was a little cramped having my family of seven plus our dog, her family of five and her cat in her small double wide trailer. We were cozy though! Tracy and I enjoyed cooking together and long walks with plenty of heart to hearts by ourselves. I miss her so much already. My children were not ready to leave as they thoroughly enjoyed the country...she lives in the middle of nowhere land and I love it. My children helped Eric (my best friend's husband) chop wood almost everyday and my son couldn't wait until he got to the wood pile. Of course in the end it it is always good to be home.

When we returned home, that was the end of my husband's winter off and he returned back to work. Shortly after, I decided to get a job. I took a job that still allowed me the time home that was needed and that would get me some good money for the three days that I worked. I felt I needed some time outside of the home and we definitely need the money to get caught up on some bills. For the most part, I enjoy my job.

We got our garden in and it has been growing great! Since we only have a small backyard and could only have a small garden, we put in a larger garden at my father in laws. We run over there every other day to soak it real good with water. My husband stops by after work to water it sometimes to save on gas.

I have also been trying to focus and discipline myself on healthier food for my family. I have been purchasing food from the farmers market and found a place to order organic meat. I plan to discipline myself on the canning issues too. I have canned some strawberry preserves and pickled watermelon rind. I cannot wait until my green beans take off as this is my favorite thing from my garden. I have also been purchasing my eggs from local Amish farmers. I am trying to stay out of the store as much as possible.

I have been reading a lot of canning books and a book by Elizabeth George called Beautiful in God's Eyes...The Treasures of the Proverbs 31 Woman. WONDERFUL!!! Just absolutely love it. I highly recommend this book to any woman who is trying to model herself after the Proverbs 31 woman.

Many blessings to you all!

15 years ago today....er, a few hours from now, I was awakened with a distinct pain in my lower back. Not just any pain, but the very "uh oh" pain of birthin' a baby contractions.

This was at 3:30 a.m.

One problem: our first born child was not due to be born until July 18......some six weeks later.

Clearly, our first born had his own schedule and by the time we arrived at the hospital by about 4:30 a.m., there was no turning back - the baby was going to be born - 6 weeks early.

6:50 a.m. - Sam was here, 5lbs, 5 oz.'s. and 24 hours later, they sent us home. First time parents are never really ready for their first "baby" and, truthfully, I believe I sat in shock for the next 6 weeks until his original due arrived.

Life with Sam has been much like his arrival into this world - a blazing path before him to conquer on his agenda. It has been an amazing blessing to watch him grow and to share life with him - not, however, without its challenges - but a joy every minute of every day.

And today, he turns 15 and becomes his Momma's personal "chauffeur"!!

Happy Birthday, Sam!
I love you,
Mom

Let the Clearing Begin!

What a week this is turning out to be. Yesterday our second flock arrived and today, we are beginning the see progress toward the next phase of our farm dream………..clearing the upper 26!

After exhausting the possibilities of having someone to harvest the pine timber for anything (including mulch or toothpicks), the reality statement we were told over and over and over, “…..if you wait another 15 to 20 years, they’ll be worth something….but it's hard to know since the timber industry continues to drop.....” In fact, we called so many different tree people, I lost count. I was to the point that I really didn’t care about making any money if someone would clear them for their own profit and our land would be pasture ready.

The thought of waiting ten to fifteen years was as if someone was telling me to tread water for that long……….but you know what? The Lord knows the plans He has made for us; why we are here and the desires of our hearts. Through His perfect timing, He has paved the way for the clearing to begin.

Heavy equipment arrived around 10:00 a.m. and we will hear the hum of machinery over the course of this week and perhaps into next as the pines will be cleared and we will begin the process of gathering ourselves and moving forward with the continued vision of our homestead endeavors.

Check out the photos from Day One – Clearing of the Upper 26:

BEFORE....

AFTER Equipment Arrival and Clearing was underway...

.....and then, Alan pointed out this morning that cattails are growing in our pond (I thought that the foliage was a type of water iris that I had planted and lost)...........we never had cattails around here anywhere; I've been trying to find cattails to plant in the pond for two years.........they have just appeared and are growing in our pond.
Amazing!

They're Here! They're Here!

The phone rang at 7:30 this morning; our chicks were waiting on us at the Post Office - BRAVO!!

One by one, we dipped their beaks into the water to "prime them".....64 chicks later, our new flock was running around their chick corral - full speed ahead. At just two days old, they are all active and already have their chicken behaviors - scratching, grooming, and establishing their pecking order! One chick in particular - we suspect to be our Sicilian Buttercup Rooster: Don Corleone. He is clearly establishing his dominant presence and letting everyone know who's boss!

We have 15 different breeds (I will post them w/links later) and, yes, we will name all 64. The Don will have two hens to round out his breed: Maria & Sophia.

Gotta run - too much fun w/chicks this afternoon!

And They Questioned Why We Moved?

Is it any wonder WHY a family would move from here?

This is the very county we left - though persuing our homestead dream and clearly there's little to no homesteading in Gwinnett.  And yet, certain family members just don't get that.........oh yeah, they still live there.  No wonder.

Ostriches.

Getting Ready for Chicks!

We can hardly wait for Monday to get here - our order of 60 chicks are due to arrive at our Post Office first thing Monday morning!

Meanwhile, we are all chick ready. Check out the stages of building our chick corral in our garage:

We bought 12 bales of wheat straw to create a chick corral. After the chicks get their hard feathers and are moved up to stage two coops in the chicken yard, these hay bales will be used inside the chicken house.

We put down a generous layer of newspapers. This doubles with the hay and litter we use to ensure our tarp doesn't get too soiled.

Our litter material is ground corn cobs. It makes for an excellent and absorbing litter.

I'll be setting up the heat lamp tomorrow and we are all ready for our long and anticipated delivery of our second flock!

Stay tuned - I'll have photos of their arrival on Monday!

:)
