I want to share some exciting news with all of you!  I am now an educational consultant for Discovery Toys!  I am hoping that if you are reading this you are asking what exactly that means.  Please read the highlights regarding this wonderful opportunity and how you can receive up to 20% off your purchases with me - now!

I would like to offer a discount to all my fellow homestead bloggers!  If you place an order in the month of April you will receive 20% off retail!  SO, please review the catalog and make up your list of the items you would like to order, then simply leave me a comment or send me an email with the items you would like to purchase, your blog address, and your preferred method of contact (email or phone).  It's that easy!

AND if you are willing to place a button on your blog like the one on my sidebar, in order to share these educational toys with your like-minded friends, family and blog buddies, then I want to offer you an automatic 10% off ALL of your purchases for as long as you host the button on an active (meaning you post at least twice a month) homeschool blogger site.  Think of all you can save between birthdays for your kids, their kids, Christmas, summer educational toys, baby showers, ancillary products that will compliment your child's learning needs, etc!  Email or comment me today to start saving!

I have been approached to represent many companies, but have never had a conviction of any kind ot sell them; however I am thrilled to be able to offer Discovery Toys products.  Read on to learn how you can earn money from home by becoming a consultant for a reputable company with long-standing respect in the education industry!  The level of encouragement and positive attitudes within this team is such a reward in itself.  And you DON'T HAVE TERRITORIES so you can offer these oustanding products with a lifetime guarantee to anyone in the United States!  I would love to have you join me as I know we are already like-minded as homeschooling mothers with a passion to educate our children.

Investing in your child's education has never been
SO MUCH FUN!

God often speaks in a language mistaken as “coincidence”.

First of all, let me THANK YOU for visiting my website.  Whether you’re here through personal contact with me, via a referral from a friend or relative, by web searching for quality educational products, or by “coincidence”, your visit will be a rewarding one!

Now you ask, "And what is it that you do?"  I am a consultant for a company that helps parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends, and the mother who was the victim of a sneak-attack birthday invitation to find educational toys that the children in their life will love to learn with!

A teacher is simply a student with unlimited blackboard privileges.

I started my career with Discovery Toys based on the strong conviction that we are our children’s most influential teachers.  As a homeschooling mother I was already living out that belief, and Discovery Toys has given me the opportunity to learn the priceless blessings of learning to play with my children.  That may sound like a silly statement to some of you, “learning to play with my children”, but being a single mother for many years had limited my time and ability to be a playful parent.  I had spent so much time being mom, dad, disciplinarian and financial provider that I had nearly forgotten what it was to be a friend.  Discovery Toys has given me the awareness and tools to satisfy a conviction much deeper than being my child’s teacher; being my child’s friend.

Hope: to desire with expectation of obtainment; to expect with confidence

If you’ve been hoping for the opportunity to earn a supplemental or full-time income for your family and to represent a well-established company with confidence, Discovery Toys may very well be what you’ve been waiting for.

Fruit and Veggie Co-op

9:28 PM, Sunday, March 26 .. 0 comments .. Link

A woman near our neighborhood started a fruit and vegetable co-op.  What a great idea!  We drop our name-labeled-basket off on Friday night with $15 and pick it up on Satruday morning full of fruits and veggies.  She does this every two weeks for us.

As you can see from the first photo, there is a wide variety of items in the basket.  It changes each week with what is in season.  This week we received celery, zuchinni, cauliflower, oranges, lemons, tomatoes, red potatoes, bananas, strawberries, yellow peppers, red apples, mangos, gala apples, butternut squash, asian pears and yams.  The second photo shows the basket as we received it and the third photo is a fruit medley I took to a party this weekend (all the fruit on the platter was from our last basket!).

If you don't have a co-op in your neighborhood, I would recommend starting one!  Ours currently has over 150 families!  Even if she is making only a couple bucks off of each basket, she is making out and providing a great service!  It really helps me expand my recipe horizon as well!

A love like this...must listen!

"I ran across this story about Annie and Jerry Perasa and I just HAD to share.  You will definitely be blessed.  Although I am not partial to many of NPR's liberal slants, I have discovered wonderful diamonds-in-the-rough there.  This one sparkles more than any of them!  Just take a listen:

http://www.npr.org/dmg/dmg.php?prgCode=ME&showDate=24-Feb-2006&segNum=18&mediaPref=WM&getUnderwriting=1

"The story of Danny and Annie Perasa -- how they met, and how they've stayed in love -- inspires many who hear it. Their joy in life, and in one another, was celebrated recently in New York, where a crowd gathered to honor Danny and Annie.

"The Perasas are a memorable couple. In person, they come off like a pair of favorite grandparents, with thoughtful wisecracks and stories that take unpredictable turns. They say their affinity for one another was always obvious -- Danny proposed marriage on their first date.

"When the Perasas launch into a story, their joy in telling it is obvious. Married since 1978, they have a sweetness about them that makes everyday items -- like notes left around the house -- seem exciting. On the radio and in person, Annie and Danny's infectious enthusiasm draws listeners in, making them strain to hear what the couple have to say.  "Their enthusiasm has now been honored in a tangible way.

The StoryCorps oral history project has dedicated its booth in Grand Central Terminal to the Perasas. On Friday, Feb. 10, a plaque was unveiled that dedicated the booth to the Perasas.  "The plaque reads: 'This booth is dedicated to Danny and Annie Perasa, who recorded their story here on January 6, 2004.

Their humor, heart, eloquence and love will never be forgotten.'"The couple made the trip to the ceremony despite Danny's illness: Suffering from pancreatic cancer, he is currently in hospice care. Their visit was a treat for those present, as the Perasas revisited the conversation they had that day in 2004, and the life they've shared since 1978."

What a blessing to know your love's love in this way...

Raw milk update

7:26 PM, Monday, January 30 .. 1 comments .. Link
So, we have officially been  using raw milk for nearly two weeks now.  I have noticed a couple things.  I do not have problems digesting this milk; however, I do still have problems with other dairy, which only seems logical.  We would like to be able to purchase the raw milk butter and cheeses as well but it can be costly so for now I am simply limiting my intake.

However, there is something strange that I have noticed and did not expect.  I used to buy

Lactose Free Breyers ice cream because it didn't upset my stomach like the regular ice cream did.  Now, when I eat lactose free, my stomach is VERY unhappy.  It is really quite strange.  It is as if my digestive system is reacting to the altered food.  So we have officially stopped buying lactose free.  We bought some regular ice cream last week and I had a bit to see what might happen.  It didn't seem to tear my stomach up like it used to, but it still wasn't 100% kind to me.

I am really enjoying being able to drink milk and eat cereal.  I never liked drinking milk before because of the "texture" but it isn't that way with the raw milk.  So, I don't know if there is anyone out there who knows more about digestion and the lactose free/raw milk comparison, but I'd love to hear if you have anything to share.

A raw milk experiment

6:56 PM, Monday, January 16 .. 3 comments .. Link

So we finally did it.  We made it to the local raw milk farm and picked up our very own.  Here's a bit of what we learned.  The dairy here has an incredible, yet terrible, history.  It seems that the UDA (United Dairy Association) has run amuck out here and has been labeled the "Milk Moffia" as a result.  Just last year, the raw dairy farm was given permission through a contract to sell its milk at some of our local farmer's market stores.  The anitcipated number of gallons to be sold a week was estimated at 500 by the farmer.  However, the milk shot off the shelf...1200 gallons the first day!  There were waiting lists to purchase the milk as the farm is the one and only raw milk dairy in Arizona.

Naturally, the UDA became a bit concerned about the competition it was receiving.  There was a real desire for raw, organic milk over the tradition homogeonized and pasteurized versions.  The UDA pulled the contract from the farm and ripped it up stating that they had voted against it because raw milk was suddenly "unhealthy".  Well, the farmer didn't comply quickly enough with the UDA's demand it seems, and he ended up being advised that he could not sell milk, or even step foot on his own farm for at least three years.  If he does so, he can have a 100 MILLION dollar lawsuit brought against him by the UDA.  There are investigators who sit on the opposite side of the road from the farm now to ensure that he does not break the law.  They also watch the current owner to make sure he is not selling to retail stores or markets because they would slap a huge fine on him and attempt to shut him down as well.  After the new farmer took over the farm, he had his windows shot out of the store, his tractor tires slashed and his milk repository left open so that they milk would flow out in a waste. We are very motivated to support them in their endeavor to offer this milk the way God made it...not that their purpose is Christian, but it is the way God made the milk - straight from the cow.

It appears that the greatest difference between store-bought organic milk and raw organic milk is that the pasteurization process kills off the enzymes that would otherwise help to digest the milk.  I have had stomach problems with digesting milk for years, so I am looking forward to testing the waters with this product and annoucing my findings to you all!  Something else very intriguing about raw milk is that it will not simply "go bad" like store-bought milk.  Rather, the milk will turn after fourteen days to sour milk, them to sour cream, to cottage cheese and on to cheese.  It can be used to make butter and cream as well!

Raw, organic milk

I love to post entries with photos but my dear hubby replaced my computer with his old one so I could upgrade and it doesn't have my photo transfer software on it.  I have to find it and install it quickly because there are so many great photos sitting on my camera right now!

However, I did want to post a link to this great site that I found while looking for the organic raw milk farm in our area.  It is called Local Harvest and you can search their website for food co-ops, farmer's markets, and even specific food items that are raised organically.  I am pretty excited to check it out and would like to hear what others might have to say regarding their opinion on organic, raw milk.

They say that it isn't "bad" even after it sours because it has simply crossed over into the cheese-making process.  So, this leaves me with two questions for you all:

What do you think about raw, organic milk?  Taste?  Health benefits?  Health risks?

Is it possible to make cheese at home without any special cheese-making tools?

Homestead dreaming

11:52 PM, Saturday, January 7 .. 3 comments .. Link
Yesterday Shayla and hubby and I went to go see the movie Dreamer.  We had intended to for quite some time because Shayla has taken a great liking to horses and cowgirlish stuff.  Also, there have been several occassions when people have told her that she looks so much like Dakota Fanning, the young movie actress (Dakota  on left and Shayla on right).

We thoroughly enjoyed the movie and left the theater dreaming about what it would be like for Shayla to own her own horse.  Of course that led to my own dream of owning our own piece of land; therefore, I found this post applicable enough to homesteading to write it up today.

Both Shayla and I looked online and chose the horses we would want if we could pick one now.  The horse on the left is the one I chose - beautiful eyes!  The adorable horse on the right was Shayla's choice.  Of course there were about fifty other horses that Shayla saw and wanted to buy, but now she has a goal to save toward buying her own horse.  Guess we better start saving for some land!

Comic relief from a cactus?

4:12 PM, Thursday, January 5 .. 3 comments .. Link

We went to Home Depot yesterday to pick up some plants and ran across this really cool looking cactus...

it's appropriately called the bishop's cap cactus due to its shape.  Although the one we saw looked like the cactus on the left, that was intriguing enough for me!  I got home and investigated the cactus today to find out that they can also flower beautifully!  I want one and I don't even care for cactus!

Here's another cactus our family appreciated a couple weeks ago on a four wheeling adventure.  Poor thing must have suffered hallucinations from the heat and imagined jumping right into the mirage of a swimming pool...

And so it begins...

Well, I must admit that the perfectionist in me would have preferred to have my blog "just so" before submitting my first entry, but I suppose that is much like waiting until you can afford a baby before you have one...it just never seems to happen!  Therefore, here it is, the official entry numero uno on my homestead blog.

So, a little tidbit about myself...I LOVE fabric!  I love the feel of it, the cut of it, and the way it moves.  I am a fabric-aholic...though I have yet to learn what to do with it once I have it!  I aspire to learn knitting, sewing and crocheting this year so I urge you to look forward to posted projects!  For those who are just learning it will be a source of encouragement...to those who are experts, a source of humor.

Below you will find our eight-year-old daughter's dream dress.  She was asked to draw it during creative writing.  As you can see, she shares my love for MANY fabrics!  Our three-year-old also joined in and drew a picture of mom and dad and the ball right next to it.  Hubby and I appear to be coordinating well in our pink attire!
