New garden

We got a load of straw delivered yesterday. Our 1/2 acre has recently been cleared to make way for an extra house (Mum's) and so I'm starting over with the garden again. It's been way to hot to plant anything new lately but I'm so glad I managed to squeeze a few plants in early Summer that I can now enjoy. Picked my first tomatoe this morning.   Spring and Summer have been much busier that most years around here as we've been trying to establish Mum in her new home. She's settled in nicely and is keen for us to share the gardening. I'm happy to have something help out a little. My dear husband's idea of gardening is...........and I quote, "If it's over 6 inches tall, you should let the sheep in.".   So, he stays away from the garden. LOL!

We had 60 bales of straw delivered yesterday. This time last year, I just bought 2 large bales. They're around 8'x4'x4' and apparently equivalent to around 30 bales. So we've bought a similar load. I'm SO glad we live in the country as we can get these bales very cheaply. Being able to ring a few local farmers and see who needs to get rid of last season's straw is a real bonus. If we lived in the city, we'd pay as much as 5 times more than we do now. Eeeek!! As we get the garden established, I'm sure we won't need so much each year.

We will buy a variety of fruit trees this winter. I also want to buy more berries. Mum put in a raspberry and marionberry and we'd really like to get a few more of these. A decent vegie garden will have to wait until next spring.

Look how my my spuds have grown in 10 days.
