I'm just saying....

...that getting the McMurray Hatchery catalog in the mail today is almost as good as getting a Christmas card from a close friend.  Almost.

I love looking at McMurray Hatchery catalog and picking out chickens from it. They have such colorful pictures. I know what you mean. I get excited about it too.

Frost Zone

Thanks so much for your answer -
However, I did check out the link on the porch - that is what led me to your blog. I found that I am in zone 9 - but I don't know how to translate that to a date. Any suggestions?
Thanks for being so patient with me as I learn. I am so new to this!

Thank you

I went to the link that you sent about the frost date - I am closer to Beaumont/Houston, TX and it gives 3/17 as the frost date! Wow! That is not that far away -
Okay - another question - when do I get seeds started, and do you know any good sites that give me ideas on how to start those inside? I don't want to spend a fortune in plants like I have in the past!

Hi Denise,
We have Rhode Island Reds. Yes, there is somewhat of a decrease in production this winter so far but it hasn’t been to bad. If all the conditions are good and consistent, there shouldn’t be too much of a decrease. Also, a consistent diet that has plenty of protein and a light that’s on for some of the nighttime helps with preventing much of a decrease. We’ve read on a chicken website that their production shouldn’t go down in the winter time if they have plenty of protein, etc...Some hens do well in the wintertime, but with plenty of light and protein, we’ve found that they all do ok in the winter.
Hope this helps,
emy and lee
