Homestead Challenge: Day 3

11:10, 2007-Jan-8 .. Posted in Farming the Yard .. 3 comments .. Link

I blogged on the Front Porch a bit ago (Hitting Paydirt) about calendar planning for the garden.  I noted in the column that my last frost date (LFD) is April 21 (I'm in a tender spot between zones 7 & 8).  I haven't listed every item I plan to grow this year yet; as I'm reading through the Square Foot Gardening book, my mind is darting around my raised beds and I'm thinking about how to do things differently this year to maximize the spaces we already have prepared.  But I am also thinking of the leftover seeds I have from last year and even back to 2005 to see what I can start inside without having to spend much more money on seeds.

I just looked at when I need to start my leftover broccoli seeds in relation to my LFD:  that date is 12 weeks back, making it January 27!!!  Less than three weeks away!! I mean, the spring will fly if I can get this seed starting plan in place.

Now, the trick is going to be where to keep these little treasures while they sprout and grow......hmmmmm.

Ok so how did you get that info????? My Square Foot book is packed up. I would love to know where excatly we are on the Zone chart. I found some seeds from when we were still in FL and well the map on the back is rather vauge where we are now. RIght on the edge of blue/gray. NW AL really close to MS.
Thanks for posting this.
Blessings,
Debi

HOW do I figure out what my last frost date is???

Thanks for the info - I am new at all of this - and may be back with more questions!

Clarification

The Square Foot Garden book does not have a Zone Map in it, nor does it list specific last frost dates for Zones. I found a map and a state-by-state, city-by-city listing for frost dates on a website that I linked to on the Front Porch/Hitting Paydirt column. Click on those links and you should find your specific date, give or take a week.
