Wal-Mart and Organic Food

09:51, 2006-Sep-25 .. Posted in My Soapbox .. 2 comments .. Link

I ran across a press release today on the Organic Consumers Association website.  Seems the Cornucopia Institute is taking issue with how Wal-Mart is sourcing their organic food.

I realize anyone can allege anything in a press release, but some of these points are quite valid and it will be worth watching and listening to how WM addresses their concerns.  I have wondered if WM would try to set China up in the organic business like they've done with plastics and manufacturing.  This group sees that possibility (probability?) and it appears that they are watching closely.  I'm glad to know someone is.

yes, I have great concerns that America is destined to become no more than a crossroads for consumer goods and all of our food will come from elsewhere. Are you aware of the "government contract" that one of the big Agri-corp's has with the war in Iraq? Iraq and other countries like it in that region have been producing crops for decades/centuries by collecting their own seed, planting again, harvesting, planting again, etc. This company is now "contracted" to show the Iraqi agriculture how to "properly" cultivate and grow crops "the American way" - the catch is - they have to use the seed produced by the Agri-corp - all engineered and hybridized - out with old and in with the "pay us every year for your seed" way......

How soon can we expect to see U.S. grocery shelves stocked with foods from "Iraq"? Betcha the labor costs are substantially lower - whatcha think?

Scary.

Does anyone else see these things?

I saw this great documentary a couple of months ago called The Future of Food. You should rent it or buy it. I need to post a whole entry on it with links. The insidiousness of Big Ag is really truly scary. And not only scary but down right arrogant! The USA telling people how to "properly" grow crops. I mean, this is only the CRADLE of civilization over there! How have they been eating for the last, oh, 5000 years! For cryin' out loud.......
