Just the Basics

I have been reading other blogs today and I am feeling overwhelmed!! What should I do first?! I desire soooo much to be a true homesteader, but I feel I am at a loss.  All you experienced homesteaders, what are the top three things that I should do in my home? I need to get started, but where?!

My suggestion would be to start with baby steps. Read as much as you can. There are a couple of good books to start with.
~Back to Basics by Reader's Digest
~Storey's Basic Country Skills by John & Martha Storey
~The Self Sufficient Life and How to Live it by John Seymour
Then find something you feel you might enjoy doing. Our family started with a small garden and went from there. We are getting closer and closer to Self sufficiency. We garden, preserve, do all our home renovations, quilt, sew, have a small home business, etc. It's taken a number of years to get there though with lots of reading, trying things out, failures and successes.
Never give up on your dream of homesteading. It will come with small steps.

First, make sure it is the Lord calling you to make changes. Then pray every step of the way. Everyone is different.....so I am guessing no one way is right.
For me, my journey started with a garden. We ate out of it and gave the rest away for the last 2 years. This year, be canned tomatos and made sweet pickle relish.
I bought a grain mill and have began experimenting with making my bread from whole grains......it's wonderful.
The key here is don't overwhelm yourself. Pick one thing and work on it.......like, a garden, even if it's an herb garden. But while you are doing that......try to rely less and less on the "world".
Get rid of any debt. Don't buy things that will not last. Stop watching so much tv. Stop all 'worldly' magazines from coming to the house. Spend more time outside with God. Spend more time inside with God.......That's where I am. Doing little things on the outside, but cleaning the world out of my heart and mind with the Word.
Don't get frustrated. I did. I posted this question long ago and only got a couple of comments.......now I see that because everyones Walk is different, that's why no one commented!!
I hope this helps.

Glad to have you on my friends' list. I began studying and pursuing simplicity almost 6 years ago, when my son was born prematurely and I wanted to stay home with him. It has been a much more magnificent and satisfying journey than I had anticipated. Where to begin? I suppose I would suggest that you do a thorough housecleaning and prayerfully get rid of excess. (The Quakers called it "cumber".) God's Word tells us that if we commit our plans to the Lord, they will succeed. I really think that a simple lifestyle comes differently to all of us and that the Lord will draw you into each step He intends for you. It will be a delight to read your blog and see where He will take you! Blessings to you............Denise (prairiemom)
