The Brewer Family

• 2006-Jan-26 - Grandparents

Well the day I hoped I never had to witness hit me in the face last night.....I visited my grandpa in the nursing home........He has mid stages of Alzheimers and did not know who we were........We had a nice visit, mostly just listening to him talk, he was talking about going home with his father and getting the fields planted, it breaks my heart to think of the Grandpa he was and how his mind is just not the same, where is the memories of the Coke and swiss cheese and pretzles sitting around the kitchen table at Grandmas with all the cousins?? Where are the memories of the annual 4th of July get togethers? Oh how it breaks your heart but listening to him talk he is in the place where he was safe and happy and that was the boy of his youth........ with his parents on the farm.........so as much as we miss his memories I am glad that he is thinking of something that makes him happy

I'm sorry that your grandpa and your family is going through this. But I think you are right in taking comfort in the fact that he is at peace and is in a place that makes him happy. Many prayers to you!

It is hard to think about the fact that so much of a wonderful life is lost when a mind loses the memories. But you can treasure the memories for him and treasure the memory of who is really is and was.

oh Jen, that is SO hard! My grandma was like that, just not knowing things and forgetting all the time...that was 15 years ago, I was young and didn't understand it. She was in a nursing home and I still can't go into one without thinking of her, I want to remember her for the fun times, like you've stated. Your grandpa talking about his younger years and you mentioning what you did as a kid...guess we'd all just like to remember them days and when you get to where you can't think as you once did, it's nice he's able to go there and find peace!
Praying him and you!
Lisa
