Chicks Moved Out
The chicks are very happy in their new home. Three of them are 7 weeks old and the other two are 5 weeks old. I set them up a spot in the storage side of the chicken coop, separate from the adults. They have about 20 square feet in there. I hooked up a light for them with a 60 watt bulb - mostly for light, but the heat will help at night when it gets cooler. The temperature outside today was about 64 degrees, so they didn't really need the extra heat during the day. That side of the coop only gets light through the little window in the door, so the extra light will be good.

Making progress on the fence for the chickens. Yesterday I dug two holes and today I dug 1 1/2 holes. That leaves just 4 1/2 holes left. I bought all the lumber for the fence and began staining it today too. I will feel good when the fence is finished - see all those big rocks I've been digging out?!

Canning This Week
We bought 8 sockeye this week and I picked them up Thursday. I filleted them that night and stuck them in the fridge. Total filet weight was 44 pounds - average of 5.5 pounds per fish. Yesterday, I canned up 14 pints (used just a bit more than 3 fish), vacuum sealed the other filets and froze them. Aren't they pretty?!? :o)

Getting guts
Ok, I know I came to this planet with them pre-installed. My guts, I mean. I'm certain of it. They have to be here somewhere..... There is some classes coming up for basic (motorcycle) riding. They teach you everything you need to know and then give you a paper to take to the DMV, and wahlah, they give you a license. However, no matter how bold I am becoming in doing things differently (like getting my second holes pierced in my ears, may I say now... OUCH!) and independently, I am still a ..... yes, I'll say it,... I'm a girl. That being said, I know even girls come with pre-installed guts. But... I'm a girl, and girls do everything in pairs or groups. This will be done alone. Eeeek. The 'eeeeky' parts are the cost which is expensive, a 100 mile drive one way, scheduling to do this on a Thurs. evening, drive back home that night, work on Friday, back up there on Friday night, spent Friday and Sat. night there and do the classes on Sat. and Sun. Having written it down makes it a lot easier to manage, because now I can see what the obstacles are :D! I believe I have a place to stay while up there (my daughter's boyfriend has an apt. there but he's working out of town during that time, so it will be empty), I think I can navigate to the college fairly well, despite it's in a larger city. Guess the only place I'll have to do a "gut check" is when I get in the class and get astride the bike they will be providing :D!

SWD #2
Outside my window...
the scent of wood burning into charcoal in a can in the side yard. My husband and oldest son working hard to clear the space for our new "firehouse"- the home for his blacksmithing forge and my outdoor earth oven. I'll definitely be posting photos when the time comes for that.
I am thinking...
about getting dressed at some point today. I don't want to rush things though- it's only 3:10 in the afternoon.
I am thankful for...
three-day weekends! It's like getting an extra Saturday. All day yesterday, Honey and I kept thinking it was Saturday and then remembering that it was only Friday; it was great and worth the day of lost pay (as long as it doesn't happen every week :D)
From the kitchen...
wafts the savory aroma of GARLIC- three head of it, to be precise, in the buttermilk brine for my fried chicken. I am testing out a recipe from Cook's Illustrated's American Classics cookbook, a thrift store find from week before last. $2.99 is often more than I want to spend on a used book and if I had noticed the cigarette smoke smell in the pages of this one I probably would have passed it up. I'm glad I didn't now because I don't notice the smell any more and it's a great book. I think I'm going to try the thick and chewy chocolate chip cookie recipe next. I also have peach puree in the fridge and freezer that needs turning into more jam. Not my favorite chore but a satisfying one nonetheless.
In the sewing room...
that baby quilt is still waiting to be basted. I bought one of those new-fangled basting guns at Walmart recently, the kind that insert those little red plastic hang tag thingies into the quilt sandwich. I have to test it still to see if it will make holes or if I can use it. That must get done this week- baby is due on 7/11 and lives 3000 miles away.
I am reading...
Clifton Fadiman this week. Also several volumes on keeping goats, Max and Ruby books, a new-to-me Annie Dillard (we go way back to my high school AP English days) at a leisurely pace, Jeremiah. I always have time for reading- it's not optional. Oh, and Woe is I - brushing up on the grammar I never learned in that AP English class, or any of my other English classes. Blasted school systems anyway.
I am hearing...
the dulcet tones of Coldplay's X&Y album (yes, I still call them "albums") Coming up next on the ole iPod is Death Cab for Cutie's Marching Bands of Manhatten. Man, I love my iPod. Who ever said that was a frivolous gift?? Not me!
Around the house...
the laundry is ganging up on me. I really need to get it under control. I might have to resort to the dryer since my forecast shows a cloud with a nasty lightning bolt for each of the next 3 days.
I am looking forward to...
cooking in my earth oven. It's so hot in the summertime here and I have been really good about keeping the AC off for most of the warm weather so far this year. If I could keep the cooking heat outside with the rest of the heat, I might be able to keep our power bill under control. Despite a rising price per kilowatt in the past few months, I have actually kept the bill BELOW our budget amount.
One of my favorite things...
is folding dish towels, napkins and cleaning cloths. Those are my favorite loads to deal wtih, I think because they stack up so nicely into just a few piles and they all get put away in the same spot. No running hither and yon around the house to put away one measly load.
A picture thought to share...
Don't forget to head on over to Peggy's blog and read all the other Simple Woman's Daybook entries. Maybe you can make one of your own!!

Running a Small Business
Sometimes it is best to learn from actually doing...
So Brent & I have set up Abbey in her own business. She will be selling products for cats. - by default her business name is called Abbey's Shop.
As we breed kittens she has a ready market - many of the new owners love to talk to the kids & they knew we were going to get Abbey to do this - they named it Abbey's shop & it sort of stuck.
Abbey has very fine taste & she even stocks futon beds for pets, cat mint bubble blowers - (the kittens chase cat mint bubbles), possum tails, hotties you heat in the microwave that stay warm for 12 hours, kitten food, litter etc....
We finished working on it yesterday & launched her webpage, down track she will learn how to make shopping online part of the website (I havven't learnt this yet so looking forward to learning how too)
She is going to keep accounting records using a very old program we had called NZ office , I don't think it is still around anymore - my one is on a floppy disk it's that old. Would love to get my hands on MYOB for her to learn with - one day...
She has to issue invoices, a profit & loss, GST & Tax returns, stock control, ordering stock, percentages, expenses - she thought it quite cool her cellphone now has become a business expense,- learn about marketing, customer service and many, many aspects of running a small business. She will get the opportunity to sell items on Trade me and also at the farmers market in summer. We have a family friend who is a business coach we might be able to tap into some of his training too.
Homeschooling does offer some wonderful opportunities and this is one example - pretty awesome that a 14 year old (ok nearly 15) can have real hands on learning of running her own business.
PLUS today
I had a rep call in home selling Science stuff - Abbey was thrilled she now has her own scalpel, slides & petrii dishes - next we are looking out for a microscope.
James had an awesome day out with Brent - road testing Amps - his birthday is in a few weeks and he is getting an amp for his electric guitar. |

The 4th of July in Kansas
July 4th in Kansas was quite an experience for the Wood family! In California, many fireworks are illegal and normally used in the country or at parks and stadiums. Not so in Kansas! We live right in the middle of town and people have been "celebrating" the fourth since the second! We have kids walking down the sidewalk tossing fireworks over their shoulders. We have neighbors using LARGE fireworks that shoot up into the sky and light it up with brilliant colors; others are using half sticks of dynamite and M 80's!!! All right here in the middle of town!
The first night we heard these "bombs" going off we ducked! The children had a hard time sleeping the first night but after that we seemed to sleep through them easier. When I asked our land lord about it he replied, "Oh yes! How'd you all like that?!" I told him we weren't use to it and asked, "Is this legal?" He smiled and said, "Welcome to Kansas!" Bekah enjoyed the light show from her bedroom window it just takes me a little getting use too. I was informed that it will go on for three or four days after the fourth as well!
We were blessed by a visit from our James Family Friends! They arrived after many obstacles to a meal my Bekah had prepared for them. Mr. James purchased fireworks for the children to enjoy and boy did they! Ezekiel and Josiah were his "helpers." Both Ezekiel and Josiah were tickled to be given such a responsibility and I sat on the porch inserting my helpful mommy comments like: "Be careful" "Don't burn yourself" "Watch out for the house" "Don't catch the tree on fire" "Look out for your brother" "Don't point those at anyone" and every other helpful comment you can imagine. I am sure I took most of the fun out of the display with my "helpful comments" and yet everyone was gracious and understood my need to be a mommy in this very NEW experience for our family!
Our James Family friends stayed the night and will be here till later today. We are enjoying this time with them! The little ones just love to soak up all the attention. In fact, as I type this they are on the front porch teaching Mrs. James how to sword fight. Elisha came in and said, "Are they suppose to be telling Mrs. James how to kill someone?" I guess they were going into detail as to how you want to aim for the "fifth rib." How would four year olds know this you ask? Well, Bible Study of course! We were reading about some of the battles of David and those children were very attentive to every detail. My little mighty men!! They are so precious! They are ALL BOY!
Joe will arrive home in the next few hours. He went out on his first run and called me from Iowa last night. He is very pleased with his job and we both feel the Lord has led us into green pastures.
Please continue to pray for us as the Lord leads you. I treasure your prayers and love in giving your time and thoughts for our family! I continue to wrestle my flesh regarding anxious thoughts about the house in CA selling. I know that it is all in God's hands and I have no control. Being anxious or worrying won't help a thing! I can TRUST HIM. He is Faithful! I know this to be true so why do I still wrestle with anxious thoughts?! May God have His perfect will in my life- that is what I really want!
Have a wonderful week as you minister to your families dear friends!
With much love,
Mrs. Joseph Wood |

When Things Go Wrong
And not only so, but we glory in tribulation also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience.
Romans 5:3
Most of us are acquainted with adversity. And most of us don’t appreciate it. We regard it as an enemy as old as Job, who lamented, “Man that is born of woman is of few days and full of trouble” (Job 14:1).
There is, however, a positive side to trouble. It was Thomas Edison, standing in the ashes of the fire that destroyed his laboratory, who spoke these inspiring words, “Wonderful! All our mistakes have been burned up and we can start over.”
Even in nature, life depends on resistance. A fish, without the buoyancy of water or the thrust of the current, would be unable to swim. Birds, without the lift provided by the air against their wings, would remain earthbound.
In its metamorphosis from larvae to caterpillar and finally into the beautiful creature we call a swallowtail butterfly, the vital principle of struggle and resistance is striking. In its final stage, there is so much visible effort as the fully developed butterfly struggles to emerge from the chrysalis, that a sympathetic observer is tempted to come to its aid and slit the cocoon open with a sharp knife. This, however, would be a good deed gone awry. Without the benefit of the effort involved, its wings, which were intended for flight, would be mere appendages. The poor little creature, deprived of the life supporting benefit of struggle, would be doomed.
“When things go wrong.” How dare I entertain such a thought? The Word says, “All things work together for good.”
Jerry Yoder, Auburn, KY
Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all.

Today... Happy 4th!
I took the girls to the parade. They decided at the last minute to help with the church's float, so I took them. It's about 30-35 miles from our house, so we got up early and got some chores done then left. The Parade theme this year was REMEMBER WHEN... and our church's float was small (just a pick-up truck with several walkers walking by it). They had signs that said "Wise Men still seek Him" and 3 wise men in the back of the truck with a wooden camel. They got lots of cheers, I guess, through out the parade, so they knew people appreciated the thought. My kids handed out flyers with the rest of the walkers... they has small children's booklets and magazines to hand out and a few adult flyers as well. I just watched from a friend's house which is the very corner the parade starts and while we saw all the floats, many weren't in sync until after the first block.
After the parade, I quickly ran into town with a friend's keys to her store and picked up as many empty boxes as I could fill in our mini van for the BIG FIRE CLEAN UP! I so appreciated the boxes, that means I can start right away (and we did this afternoon), just removing dirty items from the immediate house and have them out of the way for the cleaners. I packed up my cookbooks and then boxed up all the food they told me to throw and I also inventoried it all. My girls packed a few boxes of items they did not want to have messed with when they are away at camp.
We are to record our time cleaning and boxing items and we can work off our deductible. The insurance adjuster told us to keep track of times. He does not have the exact rate we will be paid at, but it will be between $8-10. I figured if we got the rate of $8, we need to work off 132.5 hours. So far, we've logged 16.25 hours. Not much, but it's hard to do much when they say you can't clean until the cleaners come. But some things like laundry and boxing up items we can do (now that we have approval). I have four pages of inventoried items from my spice cupboards. The adjuster said I'd likely have to take a price shop and get some prices on the items and then figure the cost... by how much was left in the packages. Full, half, 1/4, etc. I am really hoping that turning in sheet with prices will be adequate. Rebuying everything right now seems just over my head. First, there is no where to put it, and second, I just want the house clean before I think about restocking the cupboards. I will say however that fried potates with no seasonings aren't as grand as one might think... LOL. I really should buy a little salt and some garlic or a couple seasonings... but then again... maybe I just shouldn't fry anything!!! That's bad for my health anyways!
I am feeling a bit better today. I was thinking about how overwhelming this process is really turning out to be. And yet... I recall that recently I was stunned by the doctor's diagnosis of depression. As I was thinking of the garden... if you are gone 1 week, it takes nearly 3 weeks to catch up with weeding... things just don't stop growing! As I looked at the house and noted my past couple years worth of keeping house (little was done when I was dealing with my daughters illnesses, our hard sheep year, and my depression)... I realized I kept the family areas clean... as clean as say... there wasn't food stuck to the furniture, but dusting was done every couple of months rather than once a week... I had lots to catch up on... and if it worked out like the garden... even though I am getting my energy back, trying to keep up and catch up at the same time was still going to be a lengthy process. Now I am offered help. I was at first mortified that they are cleaning EVERY little piece of my home, but I am beginning to be grateful for this opportunity... I mean how often does one get a full cleaning and professional cleaning help when one does spring cleaning? I simply have to humble myself and just admit that I need help to get back on my feet... and Wow, God already provided that help! Even before I asked. How great is that? God is sooooo good to me sometimes that I know I hardly deserve any of this (I don't deserve any of it!), but oh how grateful I am to be His child!
Warmly, ~Melissa
