Depression era cooking
I just found this recipe on another blog and am going to try it today. I have a great facination for historical recipes. Actually, I have a facination for anything historical. The blog said that it is so moist you don't need frosting.... it uses simple ingredients and women could make this cake every now and then even with the food rations going on during the depression.
Moist "depression era" chocolate cake:
Makes a 9x9 cake.
Sift 1 1/2 cups flour, 1 cup sugar, 3 tablespoons cocoa, 1 teaspoon soda & 1/2 teaspoon salt into a bowl. Add 1 cup cold water, 6 tablespoons butter/margerine, 1 tablespoon vinegar & 1 teaspoon imiation vanilla. Mix till smooth and pour into an 8" or 9" square pan. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes at 325* to 350*.
