How to Keep Games Organized

Organized Toys
Few things bug me as much as my kids asking me to play a game, opening the box and finding pieces missing. This is a true pet peeve of mine. The thing is, often times it isn’t that my children don’t put games away properly, but that the boxes are made so cheaply that they often break down quickly.

How to Eliminate Leftover Birthday Cake
Birthdays are often accompanied by birthday cakes. Whether store bought or homemade, kids rarely seem to eat it all. So, we cover the cake and hope that mom doesn’t eat it all one night (ummm…yes I am speaking from experience), but also that we the cake before it gets stale. Here are some ideas for eliminating and wasting leftover birthday cake.

How to Make a Kite

Mom, I’m Bored!
Let’s Go Fly A Kite!
Autumn can make the perfect weather for flying kites, due to the wonderful breezes it brings. We have tried a series of cheap plastic kites that have worked, to a certain degree. However, they do crash and break easily. I often feel guilty about throwing them away, and then am reluctant to purchase more, knowing we will be adding to the rubbish. This led me to look for simple kite making methods. Ones, which would re-use materials I may already have on hand, or require little cost to acquire, were where my attention was drawn. It seems that those that are more elaborate, are not only more difficult for children to assemble, but are costly as well, and almost always are constructed of materials we don’t have around the house.

Get Rid of that Kitty Litter Smell
If you have a cat, you probably experience that awful box odor. This can even occur with those expensive kitty litters that promise no odor. If you have more than one cat, this really multiplies the odor and the cost of those expensive litters. You CAN take care of this in a simple and frugal way!

Where to Begin
There are so many things in our life that create chaos. For those who are desiring to live a more simple life, looking at making the transition can be daunting. There are so many ideas and so many areas of life to consider. But there is one simple fact that cannot be overlooked, because it is so crucial…

Helping Children to Organize Books
It can often be daunting to a mom to teach children how to keep their books stored on a bookshelf. It may seem as though they should be able to do this task easily, but the fact is it can often be overwhelming; not just for mom, but for children as well.

Frozen Beef Stew
Last week I talked about Malia Russell’s freezer meal plans. SO, as a special treat, this week I am posting my own recipe for Frozen Beef Stew. You will note that the recipe calls for pureed onions. My family likes the flavor onion provides, but NOT the onion texture. Half of my family will not eat anything that has visible onions (among other foods). Years ago I decided to see what would happen if they could not see certain foods. I started with onions and was really surprised that no one even knew they were even incorporated in the meal! If you have finicky family members, consider pureeing anything they may not like in a visible form.

Leaf Art PART IV
This is the last installment of Leaf Art, but I have saved one of the most activities for last! This activity is not just a FUN project, but it is also a wonderful time to have your children begin making gifts for Christmas. For this project you will need to have your children collect leaves. Try to collect leaves with a variety of shapes, sizes and textures. You will also need paint and some larger rocks, aluminum cans, or cardstock, depending on what type of gift you would like to create.

A Simple & Frugal Gym Membership
Many people would like to belong to a gym, but the cost doesn’t fit in with a frugal lifestyle. Gyms are costly! Even the YMCA is not a great value, especially when you factor in gas. Gym memberships also aren’t a good fit for those pursuing a simple lifestyle. Having to make time 3-5 times per week to leave the house to exercise isn’t very simple. But we all need to keep moving and we can’t afford to have a gym’s worth of equipment to use all the different muscle groups. But you CAN get a good workout several times per week at home, for NO MONEY.

Living Green Can Be Simple
Does it ever confuse you why green living can be so complicated? Some practices are almost a deterrent from incorporating this into our lifestyles. I have found that I desire to use green practices, but not at the cost of sacrificing my simple life practices. But there is one good thing that keeps me from feeling guilty, simple living often incorporates green living by its essence. Having less, means less garbage, less waste, less cleaning products to care for stuff, less time to care for stuff, less stuff to replace, etc. But how can you do more when you are already struggling to incorporate my simple living practices into your life?

I love binders for storing and organizing items, especially magazine articles! I can organize my recipes, family life, budget, e-books, etc by using binders. People sometimes laugh and sometimes are amazed at how many binders I actually have in my home. EVERYTHING has a place in a well labeled binder. This holds true for scrapbooking scraps.

How to Begin Freezer Cooking
Freezer cooking is an excellent way to save money AND time. Many Moms like the idea of once a month cooking, but don’t have the space to freeze so many meals or the money needed all at once to purchase the supplies for so many meals. These factors may deter Moms from using freezer cooking to help them provide convenience and save money. As I always say, for any lifestyle change you need to develop ways to make the method fit YOUR family.

Leaf Art PART III
Here’s a very silly and FUN way to use those leaves your children gather up from outside! We are looking forward to this one, for the autumn, because the littletons are ready for something VERY silly!
Use your leaves to make little people! You can use items such as pipe cleaners, glitter, yarn, googly eyes, straws, scrap paper, scrap fabric, card stock, and popsicle sticks (if you want to turn them into puppets). Whatever odds and ends you have on hand (a GREAT way to use them up).

Once a Month Cooking, Expensive?

Supper Thyme
In the last year a store opened up in our area called “Supper Thyme.” The window had the words, Make It Take It Bake It. Curious what this was all about; I thought I would look into what this was all about. BUT it not being a priority I ever seemed to get around to, I figured out what the general concept was and didn’t research any further. Not long ago, I realized that the store went out of business. This surprised me that it was so short lived and spurred me to look into the specifics of the store.
It is a franchise chain that carries the slogan, Bringing Dinner Back to the Table™. This had me further intrigued. As I read about the specifics of the services they offered it caused me to ponder this business. The idea is that you come into their store where they have a variety of meal options available. You decide what you want to have your family’s menu. Then you get the ingredients (pre-chopped and prepared), assemble them in bake ware, and take them home for your freezer. The website reads that you can assemble a month’s worth of meals in two hours. Now, that is pretty quick, even by my standards.

Paper Police
Paper is an issue that every family deals with. Some more than others, but we all have paper we need to store such as bills, receipts, documents, statements, school papers, art work (dare we ever throw one piece away), notes, newspapers, magazines, books, circulars, etc. The list can go on and on. Sometimes we don’t even get to those in a timely manner, missing out on a great sale on something that we actually have on our need list! That always burns me! There are lots of neat ways to keep paper under control and still have access to it, when needed.

Hi Ho Neighbors!
Just a quick heads up. There is a blip here this week, because I have been digging in heavy into researching some VERY interesting questions flowing into my inbox, faster than I can read them. LOL!
I have also had to get back to life as normal this week. I think all the sleepless nights recently are catching up with me, because I am feeling run down and my nose is stuffed to the limit.
Rest assured I will make sure the weekly posts are here by Friday (for the entire week) AND you can look forward to some extra posts regarding the questions I am receiving coming up too!
Not only that, but the Her Simple Walk Newsletter was delayed due to the seminar, and I will be working to make certain that goes out this weekend.
So, know that I am on the job!!! Now, back to my email!
Love You All!
