Tips for Reusing Ordinary Rubbish to Save $ and the Earth too!

Try these ideas to reuse items that are commonly thrown away.  Not only will this save you money (by not having to buy new items to perform the same function), but you will be saving the earth too!

  • Use empty egg cartons as seed starters.  You don't have to be a gardener to do this.  Let the kids plant a few seeds from produce or beans in the little egg sections that are filled with dirt.  It doesn't take long, but your children can observe the beginnings of plant life, FOR FREE!
  • Coffee tins are not just good for storage.  You can bake bread and other delectables in them in your oven or crockpot.
  • 2 Liter bottles have many uses.  Try cutting off the top quarter of the bottle.  Let children experiment with it as a funnel.  Use the bottom 3/4 to plant a small garden, paint as an art project, or measure evaporation.
  • Buy milk in by the gallon?  Don't throw the jugs away.  Fill with water and use as a watering can.  Filled with beans, rice, or water they are your new exercise weights.  Use to make a bird feeder.  Keep one filled with water int he back of your vehicle for those unexpected messes or over heated radiators.
It's amazing how much packaging is thrown away that can be reused which actually saves us from spending money on other items.  When did we become slaves to the gadget industry?  This is an excellent way to save money, or stretch your budget for a month or two.  Challenge yourself to find alternate items for everything you are about to put in the trash.  What a GREAT exercise to do with children!  God commands us to be good stewards of our money and caring for His creation.  How exciting to think we can accomplish a little of both with something as easy and fun as these?

These are my thoughts.

I like this post. Your suggestions are very inventive. My stepson just asked me to purchase him some weights last week. I'll try that with our empty gallon water jugs. After watching An Inconvenient Truth we are now recycling and are looking at a hybrid car.
Have a great weekend!
