For those of you outside of Australia and New Zealand, ANZAC day ( Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) commemorates the day, when on 25th April 1915, Allied soldiers landed on the shores of Gallipoli.
They were fighting the Turks, on Turkish territory in the hopes they could overcome them and open the Dardenelles Strait to allied fleets. The campaign ended in total disaster where almost a third of the New Zealand troops were killed.
Among the dead were New Zealand fatalities 2,721, almost one in four that served in Gallipoli. New Zealand wounded 4,852, Australian fatalities 8,709. Sadly the landing of the ANZACs had no significant influence on the outcome of the war.
The campaign lasted 260 days.
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them
