Yesterday morning I came across an awesome Charlotte Mason site
I've been looking for something since James assessment came back with the information he has math dyslexia
researching into it & not wanting to give up on him - as assessor recommended - ie let him use a calculator. We stopped Mathusee - in fact I sold it on to a friend.
I'm wanting to just rehash with James basic maths - so I am treating it like we did for his reading - keep him on same level until the key turned.
So I found
http://simplycharlottemason.com/books/yourbusinessmath/We will do the Pet shop one - as we run a cattery & Abbey has a real shop selling cattery items - James can run a pretend one for practice. I was tempted to make it myself - but well I'll get this one & I know I will adapt it to suit me & James' personality - I am hoping some of the chance cards have humour as that would appeal to James.
I'll let you know how it goes.
Love Leanne

Well I didn't get back on computer yesterday.
Monday was another sunny day - ahh so nice to get all the beds changed. I was able to pop them in drier (yes mum gave me her drier & I do so appreciate the old girl - drier that is & oh mum for giving it to me he he) - it just took the last bit of dampness off the sheets & they were able to all go back on the beds.
I'm looking forward to spring when all the winter covers get a good wash & air.
We got James' assessment back yesterday & he has official labels now Dyslexia & Dyscalculia (maths dyslexia) mmm so I am now researching as much as I can on dyscalculia & looking into special tuition for him & me. James was first assessed at probably never able to read or write - this assessment showed a vocab & of 16 years 7 months & comprehension of 16 years 5 months . Way to go James!!!! He is a very smart lad - just learns differently.
Some families don't believe in labeling their kids - we have gone this route as have seen how hard school is for James. It gives us more patience & helps James not get frustrated (too much). He just has to work an awful lot harder than other kids. And me as his teacher has to find different ways all the time to teach him. With a written documented record of James history - he is now able to have a scribe & extra time in exams. Plus it is recorded that if he ever goes into the school setting he should get help/extra time & it will never be be said he is where he is from being not in the system or he is lazy, not trying hard enough or behaviour issues.
Brent is copying the assessment today for me & I have a home school friend she is a speld tutor that will look at it for me, his old speld tutor who is no longer tutoring - I am hoping she may take James back on for maths & a copy for James' guitar teacher.
Talking guitar - James & Brent road tested guitars (as they do) in a shop & the owner came up to Brent complimenting his daughter's ability.. James who is often taken as a girl with his long hair was bashing out a Black Sabath Ironmaiden (could have that title wrong - I am not the music one Brent is) The owner was shocked that he was only 12 years old. He was real interested in James & got him on all sorts of guitars & amps. Fun father & son day out!
