Thanksgiving

Posted on Saturday, November 29, 2008 at 2:45 PM by Brenda - 2 Comments - Post Comment - Link

Well all of my family made it here safe and sound.  I am so blessed.

What a wonderful Thanksgiving this has been. My whole family was here and we were together. My dad and mom, both my brothers and their wives and their families (one has 3 kids the other 8), my sister and her family (she has 6 kids), and me and my family (I have 14 kids). We also had my brother-in-law and his family (they have 3 kids), and our friend Patty with her 5 kids. In total we had 51 people over for Thanksgiving dinner. We had 2 turkeys, 2 hams, 20 pounds of mashed potatoes, 3 pounds of carrots, green beans with bacon, homemade cranberry sauce, stuffing, sweet potatoes, rolls and gravy. For dessert we had cherry pie, blueberry pie, chocolate pudding/brownie trifle, chocolate chip cookies, oatmeal cookies, snicker doodle cookies, peanut butter balls, fudge, ice cream, and whipped cream for on top of everything. Needless to say we had more than enough to eat and with all of this great company and beautiful weather on top of it I can not imagine a better Thanksgiving! My dad said what a wonderful time for Jesus to return with all of us together worshipping Him. After dinner we sat around talking and looking at the countless ads in the newspaper. We weren’t going shopping, but it is fun to look to see what was on sale where.

My dad and mom and one of my brothers and his family left for home today (Friday). I am very sad to have them leave. My other brother and his family is here until Wednesday morning. Today (Friday)I spent the day at my sister’s house visiting with my sister and my brother (he is staying at her house until Sunday and then mine until Wednesday). We had such a great visit. I can’t believe how similar we still are. You can sure tell we are all brothers and sisters.

I haven’t really been doing anything else except visit and keep up the house while they are here visiting. I remember the Mary and Martha story. We are all exhausted, but a good exhausted. I hope your Thanksgiving has been great and you are enjoying the blessings God has giving you and yours.

Blessings, Brenda

Black Friday Observations

Posted on Saturday, November 29, 2008 at 12:58 by gokings13 - 1 Comments - Link

It's Saturday morning.

Reflecting on the last two days.

Thanksgiving was 'different' but in a good
kind of way.
Just us, no stress, no 'putting on airs'.
Something I have to 'get comfortable with' is the fact
I do not have a 'big family'.
I do not have a big circle of 'friends'.
I need to be content with what God has blessed me with.
1 dh, 3 kids, 2 dogs, and an old cat.

We have plenty of leftovers, and will be
creating new meals with all of the extra meat.
My local grocery had turkey on sale, so I bought a 22lb
bird, for the left overs!

Went to bed Thursday night at a decent hour, and woke
up at 4:30 am for the sales.
My daughter and I have done this for 12 years.
Let me tell you what I saw in "my town".
To the north of me is a town, hurting.
75% of the people who live in this town
(6 figure population)
work in the Big 3 auto factories.
That is what keeps this town afloat.
When we went to Kohl's, I didn't see the crazed
harried people searching for the latest "what everyone else has".
I saw carts full of every day clothes.
Bath towels.
Blankets, pillows.
Sure, those things were on sale....
but my point is they were not buying the silly stuff.
They were buying necessities.
It was busy, had a long line....but nothing like
years past.

Ok onto the next town (6 figures too).
My "usual haunts" are not packed to capacity with people.
All day, we never parked more than 10 spaces from the front
doors of where we were shopping.
Dicks Sporting goods..........empty.
Best Buy......busy, but not insane.
Michael's, Petsmart, Barnes and Noble?
NOT busy at all.
Not even "Saturday after noon busy".

My daughter and I went to the NEXT town
of 6 figures +
THERE they have a HUGE shopping mall
Miles and miles of strips malls.
SURELY, SURELY we will hit traffic.........
Nope.

The busiest store we shopped at?
The music store.
Not Target, Not Kohl's, Not Michael's.
The sales this year?
Lame.
Every year they are less and less enticing.
Unless you are buying eletronics.
THEN
You can just shop on line and not mess with the crowds.
I bought my camcorder on line Thanksgivng Day,
for the Black Friday price.
It shipped, on black friday.
I can wait!! It's worth the wait!!

So my observation of black friday is this.
Either everyone shopped on line
or
The sales were not what the consumer is looking for
or
the economy REALLY is bad.

I am going to be sad when this weekend is over.
Reality will stand and scream in my face Monday morning.
Deep breath in.............Deep breath out.

Is This What Christmas Has Become???

Posted on Saturday, November 29, 2008 at 03:49 by Sher - 4 Comments - Post Comment - Link

"Shoppers at a Walmart store knocked down and trampled a worker to death when he opened the doors for shoppers to come in. If that is not disgusting enough, other workers were trampled when they tried to aid him and other shoppers including a woman who was 8 months pregnant were also injured."

I was shocked and horrified when I read this caption on another forum that I belong too. This is horrible, inexcuseable and down right disgusting!  People acting like maniacs and so filled with greed that they would trample another human being just to save a few dollars on some material thing all in the name of "Christmas"!  Every year there is less and less of the Christmas spirit to the holidays and this year is no exception.  It disgusts me the way these people acted.  If you go to yahoo.com or do a search for the news story you can read the entire disgusting event.  I learned from the news story that "when shoppers were asked to leave the store they complained and tried to continue to shop?"  What???  Is this what we want children to learn that it's okay for adults to fight, shove and treat others like this all because it's "Black Friday" and the cause is acceptable being it's for Christmas?  I can't believe society has stooped so low, yes it's hard economic times for many but does that give us a right to do whatever is necessary to the point of hurting others all to make sure little Bobby or cutie Susie have what their hearts desire under the tree come Christmas morning?

If this is what Christmas has become than count me out! I refuse to buy into the hype of retailers and greed.  It's all greed, look around...does anyone really express "good will" to others anymore?  The person cutting you off to claim a parking place and showing you their sentiments with the wave of one finger sure doesn't show any feelings of good will towards others, nor does the customer who pushes his/her way around grabbing anything and everything they can and then come up behind you while you wait at the registrer and ram their overloaded cart into your heel, hip or "behind" in a rushed attempt to cash out so they can head to the next store for even more "stuff"!

The Friday after Thanksgiving is one of leisure for us, we're not ones to get up at 4am to drive to a store in the pitch black of night to save a few dollars on some "thing" that later won't be of much importance, anyway.  So, while others rush around for bargains we are happy to spend the day relaxing at home, dining on left overs, watching TV or working on projects.  Christmas shopping- like most things these days has become much too stressful.  I much rather go shopping during the week when stores and traffic are less crowded.  There's no hurry to get from one store to another in time for early bird specials and while we may end up paying slightly more for an item it's well worth it to keep our sanity and the spirit of the shopping season enjoyable.

The news story both saddens and sickens me, there is no excuse for what was done to the store employee or the other customers.  If buying presents is all about personal greed and trying to save a few dollars while risking other's well being then where is the joy of the season?  Let's stop and remember the real meaning of Christmas....the most humble and yet glorious event that began on the very first Christmas morning with the Babe laying in the manger.  The wishes of "Good will to all", "joy" and "peace" that surrounded that Blessed birth that began in a lowly stable long ago in Bethlehem.  Love truly is the greatest gift of all!  Please pause a moment sometime today to say a prayer for the man who lost his life in the stampede of greed, for his family who now has to endure heartache and sadness this holiday season and for the other employees and shoppers who were injured.  My thoughts and prayers are with them.

Peacefully,  Sher

Blessings Everyone!! *U*

Thank You Jesus For Everything!
What a wonderful time of year. Our home is full of Christmas Joy. We had a simple Thanksgiving. Didn't over eat. Had left overs for today.
I made turkey noddle soup. Yummy.
Hubby has been doing a project outside while I have been busy inside creating.
Been listening to Christmas music for weeks now and so inspired that I decorated our home early. Was warm yesterday so I worked outside decorating some.
I have been enjoying the cooler weather.
We had a few snow flakes a couple of days last week. That made my heart sing too.
Just wanted to share from The lives of the Peel's.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I  have been saying The Lord's prayer lately.
It is a burning desire for me to do that several times a day.
I am hearing God say " Rest in me my child, I will provide."
I have no concerns or fears just because I know He is always near.
Only Father God loves us enough to do the best for us.
Never letting us down even though at times it may seem like it.
Our family is blessed, blessed...continually blessed.
It seems the more I Thank Him for the more He gives me to be thankful for.
What a wonderful life it truly is.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Will share pictures of Our Christmas Joy later.
Love and blessings to one and ALL.
Lovingly, rilda

First snow and pumpkin feast

Posted on Friday, November 28, 2008 at 10:00 by Ellen - 1 Comments - Post Comment - Link

Last weekend we had our first snow of this fall/winter, which is very early for us (we usually have some snow in January or February). Only a dusting on Saturday, but some serious snow on Sunday. It was just beautiful, I love snow! Too bad it got all rained away during the night. Now I'm waiting for the next snow.   It has been quite cold over the last two weeks, with a warmer spell during the last couple of day, but temps getting down again this weekend. I even saw our robin in the bird feeder a few times this week, much earlier than usual. Perhaps we'll get a real winter this year, I'm all for it!

On Saturday I baked one of my pumpkins and later made pumpkin pie, pumpkin bread, pumpkin cookies (all Crystal's recipes)  and pumpkin soup with it. Well, I've got to do something with all those pumpkins.  It was all very delicious, I froze one of the pumpkin breads for later.

I have a lot to do this weekend, work on my surprise for 5th December when we celebrate St. Nicholas' birthday. When there are little kids in the family St. Nicholas brings a large bag of presents usually on the evening of the 5th (reminds you of someone? ), but when the kids are older we draw names and make funny things (surprise) for each other with a little present in them. A self made poem should be a part of it as well. It's always a lot of fun.
Tomorrow night we are going to a party for my brother's and sil's 12,5 year anniversary and I have to do some studying as well this weekend along with baking our bread for the week. But first thing tomorrow morning I will go on my big monthly shopping trip. I've made my menu for December and a shopping list today and had planned to go this afternoon, but we (the family) just had a good time drinking tea and talking, about our Christmas dinner amongst others. Very important things!
I did quite well with my budget this month, just went a little over, so I'm happy about that. I'll post my menu sometime this weekend.

blessings, Ellen

What to do with Turkey Leftovers

Posted on 2008-Nov-28 at 04:35 by Crystal Miller - 2 Comments - Post Comment - Link

Do you have leftover turkey meat to use up and need some ideas? We usually eat Thanksgiving dinner the day after but by the 3rd day we are ready for something different. I find just about any recipe that uses cooked chicken works quite well with cooked turkey. The recipes below are actually chicken recipes but you can just sub turkey meat in place of the chicken:

Turkey Enchiladas This recipe is for the enchilada sauce. Fill corn or whole wheat tortillas with chopped up turkey and cheese. Roll them up and place in a 9x13 pan (or 9x9 or 11x15 pan, depending on how many people you are feeding). Pour enchilada sauce over all, top with more cheese and bake at 350 until all is hot and bubbly and cheese has melted.

And finally the last thing I do with my turkey is make Turkey Noodle Soup. I put the turkey carcass (after I have picked off just about all the meat) into a large stock pot and cover with water. I add a chopped onion for flavor and some salt. Bring to a boil and let it cook for a couple of hours. Strain out the turkey bones and remove any meat that is left. Pour turkey broth back into stock pot and add the meat bits. Bring to a boil and add noodles. Taste and season with a little salt and pepper and/or a little chicken broth powder if needed. Serve with some homemade dinner rolls and a salad.

Friday on the Homestead

Well we are in Thanksgiving home recovery mode today! LOL.. Time for clean up and then bringing out the Christmas decorations. I have already decorated my website and blog!

We had a very nice Thanksgiving. It was just the kids, Tobin and me and Tobin’s dad came too. The food was delicious. We ate dinner at about 3:00 and then I took a nap.. Funny how turkey does that to a person  . While I napped the kids and Tobin played Taboo. Then we moved onto pumpkin and apple pie. Emily was in charge of table decorations and she did such a nice job. Here is a pic of the table and place settings…

Here is a pic of me and Emily and Leanne

And one of Isaac being his silly little self

.
Grandpa left to go home around 6:30 and we all chatted in the living room until about 8:00 and decided it was time to watch a couple episodes of LOST. Then it was bedtime. All in all it was a relaxing day.

Now we are moving into December and the holiday season. I still have several gifts to sew and packages to get out in the mail. I think after house cleaning today I will work on my little grandson Owens baby quilt. I need to get my Christmas box to my daughter and her family out in a couple of weeks.  I am adding some fudge to the box and tried a different fudge recipe that was soooo good! I will be posting the recipe for it soon. I have a couple more test batches to make and get some of it in the freezer for my other gift boxes.

I hope you all had a blessed Thanksgiving day!

I ate leftovers for breakfast!

Posted on Friday, November 28, 2008 at 2:25 PM by Kitty - 2 Comments - Post Comment - Link

Everything went OK yesterday, the turkey was a hit. I saw on one of the shows on the Food Network, they put a sliced orange and a sliced lemon in the cavity of the turkey to help it stay juicy. Well it worked! I also used some cajun injector for seasoning the inside of the meat, that too adds so much flavor. So it was a hit, thank you God, lol.

I, as usual, made too much food. I sent some home with my daughter, fed some inlaws, twice, ate supper, fed strangers that stopped by to say hello, and STILL had tons of food left.  The strangers were only strangers to me, my dh knew these men from work. Grinding keeps going on 24/7 here, there are no holidays as for as the mill bosses are concerned. Things keep running. So there were truck and tractor drivers that were stopping by the house to say hello, and I felt bad and fed them.  My husband did put his foot down on not giving away the coconut cake tho, lol.

So what do you do  with all the cornbread dressing you have left, you eat some of it for breakfast.........and lunch.............and supper. If there is any left by the end of the day, I may have to give some it the cats. LOL

I will be heading out later to face the crowds at Wal-mart, ONLY because I need a new toilet seat and some packing tape. Otherwise, I wouldn't face the crowds. I'm not one for all this shopping madness. Besides, I looked threw all the sales papers, and there wasn't anything that I wanted, lol.

Have a good day, and be safe if your out in the craziness.

A little bit of this and a little bit of that............

Posted on Thursday, November 27, 2008 at 12:26 by gokings13 - 1 Comments - Link

I guess this would be a potpourri post!

Thanksgiving day huh. Wow.....from Sept 1 to date time has FLOWN by. I think I have lost my bearings because it was cold until July 5th and then got cold again, Nov 1. We never really had a 'summer' here in central zone 5. Maybe that's what's throwing me off?
I will tell you this..............I sure would love to see a little bit of that 'global warming' the tv talks about all the time!! :-)

So today, we're cooking a typical meal.
Turkey, taters, corn, rolls (home made), gravy.........you can't go without home made gravy! Pumpkin tarts, a pheasent for my son...Not a big production. I bought a HUGE turkey so that we can take the left overs and make meals and put them in the freezer.
It will be just the family. I just could not do one more year the way we have done it in the past........For days leading up to t-giving I was a wreck......the day of I was a wreck, and the day after I had a headache and a huge mess to clean up. So this year, we all decided that this was a bad tradition, and we were gonna break free!!!
So far...........no stress! YEAH!!

Thanksgiving.
Thankful to live in a country that is so generous. I am weary of the guilt trip "we are so gluttonous, we are so arrogant, we deserve God's Judgement". Yeah.......well, news flash........who doesn't? Let's talk about the poor starving. The ones who worship false gods. The ones who openly, blatantly disregard the Creator, His Creation, His Revealed Word...............ok, somehow gluttony and arrogance is "worse"? Nope. Sin is sin. I will not 'curse the land the Lord has given me" but I will Praise Him and Thank Him for all of the abundance and blessings HE had bestowed on America.
Never ever will I feel guilty because GOD has BLESSED me!!

Tomorrow Black Friday!!
I am looking forward to seeing the ads in the paper today. Not for chirstmas gifts.......but to see if they have anything we need on sale. Like hot pads. Mine are worn out. In years past we have done 3 gifts only on christmas........but again, traditions are changing at our home. Maybe this year only 1 gift each.........maybe nothing at all.......I don't know. But things are changing.
But a good sale is still, a good sale!!

Things are going to get better.
I looked over my blog and there is so much sadness and anger, I deleted a lot. I have had many complaints about my 'vomit entries' and my "anger entries"..........I guess when I 'vent' I should label it as such so people can skip it!!

My Bible study is like sandpaper on my hiney this week!!! I will work thru it though and post my highglights!!!

Off I go to the kitchen!!

Sharing The Gift Of Thanks

Posted on Thursday, November 27, 2008 at 11:37 by ~Rebekah~ - 0 Comments - Post Comment - Link

It's officially Thanksgiving and I couldn't go without wishing friends and family a Happy Thanksgiving from Doug and I.

As we start our turkeys, prepare the trimmings and open our homes for guests and loved-ones to arrive, lets not forget the things we are thankful for today. We all have SO much to be thankful for. I look at my own menu and as I saw the news today on those who are going without, I am reminded of just how much we actually have.

Believe it or not, we've actually cut down on some things, yet as we dig in to our apple and pumpkin pies, I am reminded of those who go without, others who haven't any loved ones to celebrate with, those without warm clothes and even those who's family members are away serving our country.

Lets take the time to reach out to someone in our lives, whether it be a neighbor, volunteering at a local shelter, or even donating to charities and fundraiser's this year. You each make the difference and have a special gift.

I have much to be thankful for this year and I am most grateful to God for His unconditional loving-kindness. but also for the protection on family and friends and the blessings He gives us all each day. Life isn't always easy, but it's His kind and gentle hand that reaches out and gives us hope that we may share that hope with others.

May you all be blessed each day, May He continue to love and guide you through the joys and trials, May He work within you to strengthen you, grant you peace, comfort and most importantly may you share all you have with much love and thanksgiving, in Jesus Mighty name.

I leave you with an uplifting scripture during this time of Thanksgiving. May you all know that you are loved deeply!

Serve the Lord with gladness:
come before His presence with singing.
Know ye that the Lord He is God:
It is He that hath made us, and not we ourselves;
we are His people, and the sheep of His pasture.
Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise;
be thankful unto Him, and bless His name.
For the Lord is good;
His mercy is everlasting;
and his truth endures to all generations.
~Psalm 100

Christian wife, mother & grandmother...trying to be the best example of Christian womanhood I can be. I have been married to my childhood sweetheart for 37 years. We have 3 married children, 4 grandchildren, and are living in England (after living 47 years in Southern Africa). We are saving and slaving to buy our first home here, where we can return to a rural lifestyle.
