Chicken lessons

It's a good thing that chickens are pretty easy. I am learning as I go and I do so enjoy watching them wander around our place.

One of our hens has acted broody ever since she got old enough to lay eggs.  Well, we didn't want chicks in the fall or winter, so we kept taking her eggs away.

A couple months ago, the kids left her eggs in her box thinking they'd like chicks (and I was unaware of this) and after awhile there were 18 eggs in her nest.  My dh took them all away and we used them-there weren't any partially grown chicks in them.

So, a few days days ago, she's sitting on a bunch of eggs again, but left the nest for awhile(is that normal?). My dh took them away since she wasn't on them and he says they weren't warm(by now, we've ordered 8 chicks thru the mail-part of someone else's order).  We put them in their own bucket in the fridge, just in case.  Out of 11 eggs, 9 of them had started chicks-they were very tiny, with the yolk taking up most of the egg and little blood vessels branching out-it looked similar to a placenta, actually.

So, now I'm feeling terrible!!  So, yesterday the kids bring in the eggs and 5 of them are very warm.  I brought them back out to the chicken house and found this broody chicken wandering around looking in all the boxes and clucking.  My heart just about broke for her.  As soon as she saw me she got all fluffed up and making this growing-clucking sound.  I put her eggs back in her nest and as soon as I walked away from it, she hustled right over to it, fluffed out her whole body and very gently set herself on her babies and made a really neat purring sound.

It amazes me and is so beautiful how God designed animals.  So often, I think how much better parents animals are than people.

Anyway, I'm glad little Mama Hen is happy now and hope to see chicks soon!

I had a hen that absolutely refused to get off the nest no matter what!!! She was determined to hatch an egg. It is normal for them to get off the nest. This is when they will eat, drink and go to the bathroom. Sometimes also if it is very warm out they will get off the nest too... I think this is so they don't "cook" their eggs...

Blessings,
Kat

It IS an amazing process, isn't it? I don't know how people can't believe in an Almighty Creator with a perfect design. It's such a miracle that she knows exactly what to do, and in only 21 days, there is new life!

We had a hen who went broody and insisted on hatching her babies in our garage, lol. They are truly faithful to their little babes and just as you've seen, only leave the nest occasionally.

The saddest thing we saw was when our nests were raided by a raccoon or weasel and the eggs (about to hatch) were destroyed. (The boys forgot to put the door down.) Luckily, this hasn't happened since.

We're out of the "chick business" now, and make sure to collect and refrigerate our eggs right away to avoid any embryonic growth.

Best wishes for your exciting adventure! Be sure to post pictures of your dear ones when they hatch! :o)

mc2rwe is correct. They do get off the nest to eat and drink and if it is overly warm, Otherwise they would cook the eggs.
I added you as my friend.
