A Day of Learning for all of us

We all had a day of learning yesterday.   Hannah had piano lessons, but when we all got in the car to go, the car wouldn't start.  So, we didn't go and we had nowhere else to go.  My dh took the morning off from work to go turkey hunting and got home about a half hour after we found out the battery was dead. So, their first lesson of the day was how to jump start a car.  Actually, I learned, too.  Can you believe that I didn't know how to do it??  I can't believe how simple it is.We got some seatwork done and then I had everyone do some house cleaning.

I asked Hannah(11) to clean the foyer.  She didn't have a clue-it's not her fault, though.  Her idea of clean and my idea are totally different. So, I realized I needed to come alongside and train her.  I asked her if she remembered Daddy laying this tile floor and she did.  I said to her, "if we respect the work Daddy did and the work we did, too-then we should take care of it better. But, I can't do it by myself.  I need your help."  We took out the runner rug, the shoes and boot mats.  Swept it and then I had her clean one large tile at a time.  I told her to make sure that tile was clean before going to the next one.  I helped her and Susanna "helped" us, too.  Hannah wanted Susanna to go do something else because she was sloshing water everywhere.  But, I told her this is why she doesn't know how to clean well-because it was easier for me to do it by myself.  So, we got it done and my dh said when he got home, "this floor DOES come clean!"

Jonah(9) cleaned the loft and I had to help him, too.  Somehow he didn't see all the little toys in the all the corners and behind the rocking chair.  LOL.

The farrier came later in the day to trim the horses' feet.  He's a very nice younger guy and reliable.  And, he's great with the kids.  Jonah always asks him a lot of questions, which he answers very kindly.  Many adults don't have patience with all of his questions.Anyway, Jonah asked me in a loud whisper if Joe was a Christian.  Joe was standing right there, but bent over a hoof.  I'm pretty sure he heard.  I shrugged my shoulders, so Jonah asked again in a loud whisper, "can I ask him?"I shook my head no.  I've been kicking myself ever since.  I should have let him, but I didn't think Joe would have appreciated being asked that.  But, I should've let Jonah ask anyway.  I don't want him to be inhibited like me.  I want him to stay bold.  So, I told him I was sorry and that he could ask Joe next time.

I did ask Joe some questions.  His Dad has cattle, so I asked him if any of their beef cows dig holes before they have their calves.  He said he'd never heard of that before.  Our mamma cow dug shallow depressions in the ground last year and half her calf in it.  She's been digging holes the last couple days, so we're thinking she's going to have the calf soon.  Here's a pic of her and last years calf:

The kids made an ant jar and already this morning we can see the ants making tunnels along the side of the jar.

The things the kids think of to do always thrills me.  I'm so glad we're able to raise them up in the country.
