Treasures from the past

I  have a collection of Good Old Day Magazines that date back to the late 1960’s and 1970’s.  I found them years ago at an antique store and have spent many hours reading through them.  I find these old issues more fascinating than the new.  Maybe because the new ones speak of an era that is not that far removed from today.  These older issues were  written by people who actually lived at the turn of the century or the financial crisis of the Great Depression.  The simplicity they spoke of in their youth   while having sense experienced  the time of modern conveniences  is mind boggling to me.   Though technologies become more advanced each day,  and many of us have seen its advancements,  like remembering when there wasn’t home computers, I don’t believe that any of us can say that we remember when there was no running water.

With that said, I would like to share some of these stories as I think many would enjoy them.  Many of us work so hard to bring back the simple days that these folks watched slip away.  These folks that shared these memories, I would venture to say have pasted from this earth, or the majority of them anyways.  But though the memory might seem simple to some, in the end memories are all we have to pass on history.

I am very cautious about copy writes.  I wanted it stated that this is of no financial gain.  I will quote any and all credits to author and publisher.  If anyone out there has any knowledge of copywrite infringement and can share with me I would appreciate it.  I will be doing some research this weekend to see if I can do this and not worry about copywrite police at my door.

This is a story from the June 1974  issue of the Good Old Days entitled Mom’s Wash Tub by Shirley Lewis Calhoun: she writes

“When I go to do my wash in this day of modern laundry,-clothes washed and rinsed all in one machine- I think of my mom’s wash tubs.  Though I have a dryer, I, like my mom, hang my clothes out on the line.  My clothespins are the snap-on type.  My mom used the round top-peg, type, and us children used them, also, for toys.  How my mom would “get after us” on wash day, which was always on a Monday.

My bother used them for “his cars and trucks on the dirt pile”, and we girls put faces on them for our “dolls”.

What I remember most were the wash tubs, they were two big, black, round tubs, used for most anything.  Our home was in the country, sitting not far from a creek.  We had no electricity or running water.  WE girls would carry those two big tubs to the creek for rinse water, when Mom washed clothes.  On Saturday night, the same two tubs would be filled with water for our baths: at the time there were my three sisters, and we’d take turns in the tubs.

In the summer, when Mom went to can her jar vegetables, off again we would go to the creek and fill the tubs with water to wash the jars.  Mom would then, after filling the jars, place wood slats on the bottom of the inside of the tubs and place her filled jars, placing this over the fire in the back yard.  This was the way she did her canning.

Come fall, how I remember peeling apples, throwing them over in the tubs to be washed and placed in a kettle for apple-butter making.  In the summer when the water was low, we had a natural spring.  We also carried water in the tubs for household uses.

A few w years ago, we girls got our mom a set of the modern laundry tubs, which she uses on her wash day.  The other tubs she still uses for her canning, and are in the basement where she keeps them when not in use.

My mom also used two flatirons, which were heated on the top of the stove.  Our clothes were ironed beautifully in those days-never a scorch on them.  I have one of the irons in my hone now, a reminder of how hard it was on my mom, back when.  My mother’s mother is still alive.  She was ninety-five years old in March (1973), and I love to hear her tell stories of when she was growing up.

I, too, know what it is like to fill lamps, wash the lamp globes, get in wood and coal, walk to meet a school bus, help your dad to skin squirrel and rabbit, take cod liver oil, carry your apple butter sandwiches to school and wonder why it sank into the thick slices of “homemade bread”.  Most of all, eat you oatmeal, and bedtime, when the lamp was blown out at eight o’clock.

Those days will never be again.

Packing Party...

Posted on Thursday, October 9, 2008 at 10:57 by safords - 1 Comments - Post Comment - Link

Well, we had our Africa Trip packing party and meeting.  What job! It was amazing to find we still have a few little spots to stuff a few more things in. We sure have a lot of toothbrushes and toothpaste for the orphans!!! We have very heavy things that didn't quite fill up some suitcases, but filled the weight limit. That was kind of weird and I might have to shuffle a few suitcases around still, but the "where do you start? " part of things is over with.  We got the job done.

We also worked well together... kind of plus for this trip! So far,  anyway.

Jeanne, once again, filled our tummies with great food! She knows how to handle a crowd when it comes to feeding them.

The meeting started a little on the late side but  the treasurer laid out the financial end of things very clearly.  All questions seemed to have a satisfactory answer.

I am soooooooo tired.

~ This new blog is to share with you some feelings that perhaps we have all experienced and to show forth the truth of God's Word and make a light in this dark evil world.~

But like my Dear Sweet Husband and Best Friend says " Lin , it is not about You, its about Christ in you. " So with his blessing I will post here on some issues I have faced over the years as a godly woman and Mamma.

I look forward to sharing with ya'll soon.

Blessings, the Lord Keep Thee

Update on Us: Oct 9th 2008

Posted on Thursday, October 9, 2008 at 9:06 PM by FaithfulAcres - 1 Comments - Link

Well here I am going on my second week in AL, I never even thought I would get here to visit my daughter, much less be here this long.
Mark is in NY getting out stuff and bringing it back to Linden this week coming up and then coming down to get the children and I and take us home so to say to Linden.  We are staying out on Old Hwy 13 in our RV while we wait for the house we want to rent for the winter  to become available.  Mr. Sam and his wife Daine are nice christian folks and rent us the space next to his matianance mans place and I can keep my goats there with me too.  They homeschool and just are the sweetest folks to us.  The Lord was good to lead us to meet them and them let us stay there till we get a real home for the winter. ( Lady who is to be our landlord had to evict the lady who lives there out for non payment, so we had to wait a month or so longer to get the home. Should be Nov 2nd or 12th , time will tell.)   Lordwilling we will be living in Lobelville in a nice Doublewide with a wood burning fireplace in the Livingroom, Screen Porch on the one end and porches front and back, very private area also.
Living in the RV for 9 weeks, wasnt what we had planned but the Lord provided it and so we are using it as our home till he gives us another one.  Being down here without Mark arround is not an exsperience I enjoy.  Things with my own daughter are far different then the way we live or what we desire for our own children.  My granddaughters go to Head Start Daily and other things just sorta get to me, but I am biding my time till we go home.  My own children miss having a home to live in, the adventure at times has been fun, but at times very trying on us.
The goats are living in the stock trailer and I have no fence for them and of all things were in Town. The trains at night are too many and too noisey that  is for sure, traffic is alot here too near 78. If I had a way to get back to Linden, I would go now.  Small town living in the country is more my speed that is for sure.  The goats are doing well. Magnolia kidded with triplet purebred 6th gen mini nubian babies, 2 bucks and 1 doe. I only have their dam and a non related buck now.  My buck won 1st place in intermediate bucks on MDGAs Virtual show online, so I am pleased with him and my new kids too.  Only thing is Mark would rather I sold them and that we didnt have animals till we have our own land.  I am a bit heartbroken over that but I am not arguing.  They should be in a barn and on pasture and not in town !  I did sell two to a lady in TN up in Cunningham, she is so pleased with them and I am so happy to have her have them on her farm.

Please pray for Marks traveling mercies and safe return with out things in the RV and in a trailer he is hauling. Pray it ,keeps running and  brings him safely home.

Also pray for us , we need a vechile that our family can drive to the store and such after we get settled or before, have not found one yet. Truck or mini van or reg van would do, with towing capabilites.  So we dont need to drive the RV everywhere we go.

I cannot wait to settle, get back to "normal life" baking , cooking , sewing, and spending time with my best friend and sweetheart.

Faith 6 and Hope 5 are so wanting a home. Daniel is 8 months old growing like a well fed calf and he just seems to be a happy baby. He wasnt too happy cutting teeth this week. He now has 4 , 2 top and 2 bottom.
Would you believe he just fits into 18 months clothing.  He is tall and heavy.

Well I am tired and needing to get to bed.  I hope all is well in your homes and I can't wait to meet those of you nearby home when I get there.
Debi, its near your not far away and thank you for letting me know what is up with in the neighbourhood.

Love and blessings to all
Linda
