A Day in the Life of Me

Sunday, Oct. 12:

We went to church as usual.  We had a guest preacher today because today starts our week long revival meetings.  The preacher talked about alot of different stories in the bible but one really stood out from among the rest.  The story of Noah & the ark.  The preacher said that Noah built the ark not only for his family & the animals but for all mankind.  He said that no one would take heed of Moses warning so no one but Noah & his family were saved.  I have never heard this take on this story before.  Very interesting.

Monday, Oct. 13:

Today was a busy day as usual.  Exercising, vacuuming, dishes, homeschool, 5 loads of laundry & grocery shopping.  Everything was smooth sailing....

until....

I got home from the grocery store!  I was unloading the groceries from the back of the van.  I went to pick up the sack that contained 4 half gallons of milk in it and pulled a muscle in my lower back.  OUCH!  IT REALLY HURTS!  So now I'm kind of laid up.  It takes me forever to walk around the house, thank the Lord I don't have stairs!  I went to lay down in my bed & watch some t.v hoping that some rest would make it feel better.  NOT THE CASE!  I practically screamed when I had to raise myself off of the bed in order to get up to make something for supper.  We are just having some spaghetti & a salad tonight.  I was going to fix lasagna but I couldn't muster up enough pain tolerance to accomplish that.

My youngest has been feeling sick to her stomach today.  We just got over with a round of colds last week and now another?  UGH!  She woke up this morning saying that she felt like she was going to throw up.  She has eaten a few things & has been sipping on some Gatorade, water, & Sprite.  She has kept those down so hopefully she will be back to herself tomorrow.

Until next time....

Making your own money- Pirate money that is

How to for Gold Doubloons
First we cut a piece of cardboard into circles. We all helped with this task- even the Peewee Pirate himself. Not-quite-circular circles add to the authenticity.
Next we used good ol’ white glue to make designs on the cardboard disks. You can make your own designs or try to follow actual designs (look up online or in a book). We tried to do both. You need a steady and slow hand if you want to get intricate details and we found that using a toothpick dipped in the glue was best for such matters. Of course we didn’t do too many this way- we are short tempered pirates  after all . . . . .

Let the glue dry. You will know this because it will be translucent and will not stick to your finger when you touch it. Should you touch it before this time . . . . and smear it- think of it as added detail to your coins.
After the glue is dry on one side- do the other side.

After both sides are done- its time to paint. Even a Cabin Boy can do this job. Simply paint your doubloons with gold paint. Both sides (but not at once mind you!).

After the gold paint is dry you will paint the doubloon with black paint and then immediately wipe it off. This adds dimension/texture and authenticity to your doubloon. Paint black and wipe both sides- you don’t really have to wait for drying time for this one.

And you are done.
Our doubloons are “spendable” at the
Inn on Tourtouga aka snacks in the kitchen.

The Best Pirates I've Ever Seen

Avast ye scabberous dogs!
Ahoy, Mateys! We are so enjoying our Pirate Day!
An elaboration on breakfast and lunch:

Captains Eggs was the fancy name given to what is otherwise known as Momma Eggs (scrambled eggs with cheese & crumbled bacon).
Shipwreck Stew- Mr. Conductor- today known as The Peewee Pirate, made lunch- Spaghetti O’s with cut hotdog chunks. He even helped with the can opener- what a great Cabin Boy!
The breakdown for supper- Bubble & Squeak is ham & scalloped potatoes and represents British explorers & Pirates, Spanish Rice if of course, for the Spanish, peas- they packed barrels full of dried peas (ours will be steamed from frozen- per the First Mate’s Request). Hardtack won’t actually be hard or full of weevils as I have no desire to be so totally authentic instead it’ll be just a regular biscuit recipe. Our dessert of apple tarts also represents the British. Since we had a full day of school and were making so many other dishes- we’re fudging a bit on this one too- graham cracker crusts filled with apple filling and a dollop of whip cream. These Pirates like their sweets! First Mate says we are pretending we just raided a ship that had recently restocked and had fancy diners on board. I’m good with that!
Here’s the ship assignments:

Commodore- Mr. Steady
Captain- Momma
First Mate- Maiden
Second Mate- Sassafras
Peewee Pirate/Cabin Boy- Mr. Conductor
It seems we’ve put together a good crew.
Galley duties were taken on by the Captain and Second Mate for breakfast, Peewee Pirate Cabin Boy at lunch and the Captain is helping the First Mate put together a first rate dinner this evening. The Commodore is planning on being in charge of the games.
The
First Mate has put together invitations and menu list and is currently working on the place cards. We dyed the papers with coffee instead of tea as that was what was sitting in the pot after breakfast (always frugal us Pirates!).
We also finished our doubloons and will be showing those off in the next post.
So far no one has had to walk the plank.

Avoiding colds & illness in little ones

Posted on Monday, October 13, 2008 at 02:48 by Paula - 0 Comments - Post Comment - Link

It is disheartening how many young moms are not taught how to help their little ones avoid illnesses through proper care of the baby bottles, pacifiers, and sippy cups.  Over the past few omnths, I have heard many young moms talking about their little ones getting sick often or having chronic problems with catching colds or other illnesses, sometimes even thrush.

One of the ways that we have avoided illnesses with our little ones is to be very diligent in the care of the bottles, sippy cups and pacifiers.  Amazingly, most young moms have no idea how to sterilize these things.  Just this one simple task has helped tremendously in preventing illnesses.  Now that we have 2 little ones, it will be even more important.

The first thing that helps to prevent illness is the obvious of limiting contact of your children with others who are sick.  Of course if you have a little one in day care or public school, they will share the illnesses with the little ones at home.  Whenever possible, you should limit contact however.

Teaching little ones to wash their hands during the day is also important.  Especially after using the bathroom.  You can also make up a batch of hand wipes for them to use.  Take a stack of wash cloths and soak them in a solution of water with a few drops of baby wash in it.  We use these as baby wipes for diaper changing also.  If you have a container of these where the little ones can reach them, they can easily be taught to use one to wipe their face and hands.

One effective way to prevent the sharing of illness between little ones is to not allow them to share sippy cups, bottles or pacifiers.  Take this also a step further.  Each night after the little ones have gone to bed, when you wash the bottles, sippy cups, and pacifiers take the extra time to toss them into a large kettle and sterilize them.    Sterilizing these items will do much to help prevent the sickness from speading.  Especially things like pacifiers!  A little one who has just gotten over a cold can have a relapse if you do not wash & sterilize the pacifier they used during the illness.  As a matter of habit, I sterilize the bottles and all their parts, the sippy cups and all their parts, and the pacifiers every day.  Whether it be at night or during their afternoon nap, I sterilize a whole day's supply of these.  Sterilizing all the little parts is especially important if you use the Dr. Brown type bottles or others with parts that are hard to clean.  The same goes for the flow restrictors in the newer sippy cups that are very difficult to clean due to the flow restrictor's design.

Here is the process that I use to sterilize.  I use my water bath canner kettle as it is large enough to hold everything.  I place all the bottles, sippy cups, their parts, and the pacifiers into the kettel and over with enough water to allow the bottles & cups to be fully submerged.  Place the kettle on the stove and bring the water to a boil.  Continue boiling for 15 minutes.  I then turn off the heat and allow the water to cool.  They are then dried with a clean towel.  Since I make up a day's worth of homemade formula each day, I go ahead and refill the bottles with the formula.  Sippy cups are allowed to dry fully before I assemble them, unless they are needed before they have dried.  Pacifiers are allowed to air dry, then are stored in a container to help keep them clean until they are needed.

There are some websites that say sterilizing bottles is no longer needed if you make the formula with city water that has been treated.  Some medical websites disagree though.  I agree with the doctors on this one.  We live in a rural area.  The water we get is through a rural water system, similar to a city's system.  We are receiving letters in the mail on a regular basis however that the water is not yet up to the standards that it is supposed to be ~ containing pollutants that should not be there.  The other reason is the design of the bottles & sippy cups.  Even using hot soapy water and a bottle brush, you cannot get into all the areas that need cleaning.  So, to be safe I will sterilize them.

Hopefully some of these ideas will be of a help.

I am having serious issues with updating my Avatar. Frustrated by my lack of knowledge. I couldn’t even upload the previous avatar after I started messing with it.
I am not happy with it as it is not as big as my other one was. Every time I try to increase it's size a wee bit it won't allow it.
Oh well.
Moving on.

The Simple Woman Daybook ~ #4 ~ 10/13/08

Posted on 2008-Oct-13 at 10:43 by Kim Wolf<>< - 1 Comments - Post Comment - Link

For Today...

Outside my window...another beautiful fall day.  Thank You, Lord.  Even though it is unseasonably warm today, once the rains came last week we started seeing some of that lovely red!

I am thinking...that I need to clean the kitchen!

From the learning rooms...NO SCHOOL TODAY!!  We're taking Columbus Day off as it comes on the same day that the Golden Angels homeschool volleyball team makes the trek up to Marion, Ohio for tonight's game.  It's the farthest we go for a regular season (non-tournament) game.  PLUS...my dear husband has today off from work (he's a contractor at a military base) and we want to spend as much time NOT traveling w/him as we can.

I am thankful for...an extra day to spend w/my sweetheart.

From the kitchen...my dh's favorite brunch of Amish French Toast and a new fresh loaf of bread.

I am wearing...my wonderful flannels!  Give me denim, flannel, thermal or cotton and I'm happy.

I am reading...The Last Days by Joel Rosenburg; he's sort of a Christian John Grisham-type writer.

I am hoping...that the repair work on my bow window won't cost an arm and a leg.

I am creating...a better organized house.

I am hearing...the radio, my dh turning pages in his morning newspaper.

Around the house...laundry, general house cleaning, enjoying each other's company.

One of my favorite things...now that our oldest dd is almost 21 and works outside the home, will be going back to school this January, has a social life and is involved w/a couple of ministries at our church - it's SO nice when all 4 of us can sit down to supper together.  We laugh, and gab, and plan.  It's an odd time of transition for me...I love to see them stretch their wings, but I miss being w/them all the time.

A few plans for the rest of the week...trying to keep school and housework on track w/all the volleyball.  I'm sorry I keep bringing this up, but at this time of year it's all-consuming; 3 and 4 games a week!  But this is dd#2's Senior year and we are trying to make this as special as possible (just as we did for dd#1)...so it's a big part of our lives until the 1st week of November.

Here is a picture thought I am sharing with you...

Speaking of volleyball.  They also got new uniforms this year, too.

Meet our new farm animals..We are proud parents

We got two pygmies on fri they were born in the spring. This picture is bringing them home they are in my car. They didn't mind riding at all..

The buff color one is name butterscotch and the tri color one is called pudding.

They are in one side of the horse stall and seem to like it ok. They have been in the barn since they were born so they really didn't know what it was like in the sun light.

They have been alot of company we have been holding them and loving them up. They love to eat leaves so we are going to rake and bag them up for treats this winter.

We are also looking for a good goat company to buy supplies like worming meds and I need another bell I have one.. Our local farm store doesn't carry anything for goats..

Here they are butterscotch and pudding.

Daybook Entry #13

The Simple Woman’s Daybook

FOR TODAY~ October 13th

Outside my Window... The trees are changing color- yellow, red and brown leaves dot the yard. I figure there must be about 500 or so walnuts littering the ground too. [A job for the Kiddie Pirates today.] It’s a relatively cool morning.

I am thinking... that God is in control- No matter what and I need to be patient for His perfect timing.

From the learning room... today is our Explorers & Pirates Celebration! We have successfully completed 6 weeks of school. We will continue with our regular schedule today and have a family celebration this evening with special food and games. Oh, the joys of Homeschooling! Oh and I should mention that we will be talking like pirates today. Argh!

I am thankful for… family connections and the actual connecting. And friendship connections that grow into the feeling of family connections.

From the kitchen... Today is a very special day. With it being our Explorers & Pirates Celebration we are going all out today. Breakfast is Captain’s Eggs & toast, lunch will be Shipwreck Stew and supper is Bubble & Squeak, Spanish Rice, peas, hardtack biscuits and apple tarts (not to mention Limey Punch). We had fun with breakfast and lunch and tried to pick foods that represented countries and staples from that time for supper. [Go here for the whole week’s menu]

I am creating... Pirate-games, helping finish up painting doubloons and more!

I am going... to purchase a couple of straw bales later today. We also may squeeze in a trip to the library.

I am wearing... 6-7 year old blue jeans (ah, broke in at last), brown T, silver heart shaped prayer box necklace. And a pirate bandana (because I don’t have a captain’s fancy hat).

I am reading... Whirlwind by can’trememberwhorightnow and a book by Dr. Kevin Lehman.

I am hoping... for a spectacular and very Pirate-y day.

I am hearing... the girls cleaning up breakfast dishes in the kitchen, Mr. Conductor whistling while he plays with our Frigate.

Around the house... we’re doing pirate-y things! Like swabbing the deck and cleaning the slop buckets! Oh, yes, I’m milking this- cleaning can be more fun (for awhile at least) when given new names and talking like pirates. “Argh, swab harder you filthy sea rat.” It also helps to be sporting bandanas, fake pirate tattoos and having a mock sword fight with the dusters.

One of my favorite things... making school work so fun you don’t realize you are “doing” school.

A Few Plans For The Rest Of The Week... MOPS tomorrow morning (kids have a fire safety class) and computer class in the afternoon, “regular” schooling the rest of the week, plus visiting a friend’s horse farm and (drum roll please) a double DATE NITE- Mr. Steady and I with two of our very bestest friends.

Here is a picture thought I am sharing with you...  Saturday we went to a Civil War Reenactment- here are the Confederate soldiers hiding and waiting behind the mill. They will soon march over the covered bridge and attack the Union forces. It will be a hard fought battle- close combat but the Yankees will push back the Johnny Rebs and take the high ground.
