Making Maple Syrup

Posted on Tuesday 20 March 2007 at 7:49 AM in A Little Bit Of Everything - Post Comment

Our local nature center had a maple syrup festival this past weekend. We had a great time learning about how they make real maple syrup, and an even better time eating pancakes with some of that syrup! We also enjoyed some maple candy, maple suckers, and cotton candy made from maple sugar. If we had property with sugar maples, I would definately be making my own.

Boo peeking inside the bucket to see the sap.

Some trees had 2 or three buckets depending on the size and age of the tree.

Boo checking to see if there was any sap.

Making syrup the old fashioned way. It was very chilly so the fire was a popular place to be near.

Hobbiest teaching how people could make their own maple syrup.

The steam inside the sugar house.

The men determining if the syrup was ready.

It was and they began to drain the syrup. They got 5 gallons.

Then they poured the hot syrup through several layers of special wool cloth to filter it.  The metal cart is where they had the fire wood for the fire under the syrup.

Waiting for it to drain.  From there they took it to finish the processing and bottle it.

Boo and I outside the sugar house where they were making the syrup.  It was amazing to watch all the steam coming out of the top.
