Homeschool Isn't Always At Home

Posted on Monday 21 August 2006 at 10:42 AM in Homeschooling - Post Comment

One of the things that most people around me who aren't familliar with homeschooling assume is that when we are schooling we are always home.  They like to tie it into the socialization arguments they have.  "Well if you are spend all your time at home doing school work, how will he ever learn to socialize?"  We really don't spend all our time at home.  The beauty of homeschooling is that we can set up our "classroom" anywhere...including in the car AND we can turn anything we are doing...where ever we are at...into a school lesson.

In addition to the standard trips to the post office, bank, grocery store etc. we make trips to the library and to our local parks.  We have a county homeschool group as well as a homeschool group in our church that have monthly field trips.

Here are some other activities we are doing:

We are getting a membership to the zoo.  We had one back in Michigan, but we haven't had one since we moved a couple years ago.  We like to visit the zoo several times a year (we have two that are each about an hours drive) and they offer activities and programs for kids that are great for homeschooling.  I especially like the fact that by getting a membership to our zoo that we can get discounts to other zoos around the country.  When we visit friends and family out of state we like to visit the zoos too.

We are getting a membership to our local science center. Our science center has a lot of homeschool programs as well as specified homeschool days. They are also an hours drive away but we will still plan on visiting there at least 2-3 times each month. With our membership we can also get discounts to other science centers around the country like the Detroit Science Center and Cranbrook...two of my favorites from back home in Michigan.

We are starting Cub Scouts this year. I would have signed Boo up last year for it, but I had a hard time finding a local pack. This will be for Hubby and Boo.

We'll be doing 4H again this year. We didn't do too much with them last year, I'm hoping to get more involved with them this year.

We wil be starting Boo in swimming lessons at the YMCA. There really isn't any place local to us so this is another place that is a little over an hours drive away. I think the lessons will be well worth it though.

Lastly, I'm in the process of looking for a piano teacher for Boo. We don't have a piano yet...I'm hoping to get one soon...but I really want Boo to have a good foundation in music.

Sports?  The local little league is really popular as well as soccer leagues.  Hubby would love to get Boo into a bowling league.  But who has time??

I have had my two in piano for, well ds4 for 2 years and dd2 for one (she started insisting that she have a turn at the piano when brother was having one, and, well, it is slow going - motor skills and all - but she loves it!)
so, anyway, I would recommend piano!
